Forums - PC - Nvidia Shield Portable 2 Running Tegra X1? (Runs DX12, Crysis 3, UE4 etc)

And who cares about the Nvidia Shield Portable?

THe specs look nice, but as we are observing with the PS Vita, without good PORTABLE gaming software, it's pretty much DOA.

I think being able to natively run 100s of games on steam puts it well above the PSVita support wise, it wasn't like the PSV got ports of relevant titles like God of War acension, GT6, Elderscrolls, Final Fantasy, GTA5 etc. It got a horrible COD game with a meta of 40, the worst AC made thus far and a piss poor port of Borderlands.

In anycase I'd like to think Nvidia have realistic expectations regarding the platform, its not a mainstream device and is likely just exists to introduce the Tegra X1 to the market.

I can't help but think of Nintendo's next handheld when looking at these specs.

Having a handheld equivalent to the Wii U just makes too much sense.

Actually Nvidia is very profitable because they dont take losses on their products.  There is 3 shield models, and this will be the 4th for a reason.  These products dont have to sell like XB, PS, etc to be successful

Given their track record, Nintendo having GPU on par with Tegra X1 for their next handheld would be nothing short of...I think unbelievable is the word I'm looking for. But everything's possible I guess.

Depends on what they want.

Honestly the next-cycle PowerVR Apple iPhone/iPad GPUs could possibly outpace the X1.

I think they'll more or less be on par with X1, just like current are on par with K1 (remarkable feat from nVidia, given that PowerVRs are on smaller node).

Of course, it's completely possible they go berserk and make 0.5TFLOPS handheld and 5TFLOPS home console, thus making more or less unified in-house dev platform AND 3rd party friendly home console...actually, I would love to see how that would play out.

I think something more like 0.35-0.4 TFLOPS for the handheld and 1 TFLOP for the console is more along the lines of what Nintendo is looking at. Easy to scale games up and down that way (540-720p for the HH, 1080p for the home version).

But add in a sizable embedded or stacked DRAM buffer for better memory bandwidth than X1. Nintendo loves their embedded RAM even the New 3DS has 10MB of it.

Im not sure anything like that has released to the public.  It makes sense why they stopped stocking the Shield Portables now though.  Last month they sold out and havent restocked since

The reason I bought it up was i found quite a few articles with stuff along the line of , Nvidia pleased with Shield despite being a  loss leading product, it has done it's job etc  , so they tend to paint a picture of a product that is serving it's purpose and making money isn't a priority at this point  , this is fine but nobody seems to know exactly what those parameters are in regards to the Shield.
