Forums - Microsoft - MS drops XBOX name from Music and Video (not april fools)

Too much denial in this thread, when it's been so obvious for months now that XBox is on its way out from Microsoft. I remember not so long ago, while I still had an X360 and a Windows Phone how Microsoft moved all the WP games branding to XBox games. That was still at a time when nobody expected the XOne to bury itself under a pile of Don Mattrick's Kinect debris.
With Nadella in charge, XBox has been removed from the core consideration, main gaming franchises like Fable and Halo are getting moved onto PC and mobile, Gears will most likely follow suit next year.

I doubt that they intend to sell XBox, as the console without its main IPs is basically worthless, carrying more negativity than goodwill, and any potential buyer would be just better off starting from scratch. I see XBox going more the way of Zune, a device that never managed to have a decent market share, just like XBox now is just an afterthought in any store outside of US. I always said that the brand is dying, and the console will probably be discontinued by 2017.I always said that the brand is dying, and the console will probably be discontinued by 2017. If Nintendo lays their cards right, they can attract most third parties to NX, giving them a secondary outlet besides PS4, and nobody in the gaming world would shed a tear for XBox, it will be forgotten quickly.
Halo and Gears fans would still play those games on Windows, so they would miss XBox either.

Slowly, but surely, the mandatory Kinect/always online/physical disc DRM/IP region locking/cable box passthrough experiment is coming to claim its toll. It is only ironic that in the end Zynga will live longer than XBox.

So many things wrong with this comment but I am going to remember the bold part.

bull

it just make sense

xbox is gaming

Not really considering how long they have been trying to push it. No matter if you like it or not MS WILL sell Xbox eventually unless they drastically change their business model (probably not going to happen)

no they won't, first because nobody would buy it, second because they drastically need it... It's not a matter of choice the living too space is the last tech space really up for grabs... Nobody truly dominates there only niche markets fractured in different entertainment segment (video game/tv,cable/streaming etc)... And display tech has a judge headway...

MS is mishandling it for sure but their vision is two step ahead of the competition... We will need a unique entertainment box down the last ne, not just a console, not just a roku, not just a motin/3d/VR/AR/ cable box stand alone... But an all in one box... I know i do and 100s of millions will eventually and then we'll head into the smart house for all area... But living room first.... Without that MS is in trouble in the long run outside of the business space....

Just like konami was devoted to giving kojima everything he needed. Just like kojima is devoted to finishing these upcoming projects. Just like Sony was devoted to the minidisc. Just like Microsoft was devoted to Zune. Just like Sony was devoted to the Vita.

It happens, that's just business talk. In truth there just really is no need for the xbox.

I mean seriously, tell me what the xbox does that microsoft can't do for cheaper?
Google, Apple, Samsung, Amazon all can do what the xbox is doing on a thumbdrive plugged into the back of the tv.

You really think that? Not a single one of those companies is producing AAA games for their gaming products, nor are any of their mobile devices capable of producing graphics on par with Xbox One as of yet. Nor do any of them have a position that allows them to integrate console gaming and PC gaming into one experience (except for Apple maybe).

I don't know why you editted out the rest of the post, can you please not omit pertinent information when having a discussion based on the text?

"Now MS is working on their own streaming device that 'hint hint' specifically looks at PC to TV streaming. PC being where all the Xbox games suddenly are available.
MS has no need for a box."

Yes you are right. These devices are all streaming from phones, with phone graphics. They are not on par with xbox1 or PC. But MS is coming out with a device that would stream from PC. Therefore, your argument doesn't hold up because once the product is available, it invalidates your objection...because there would be a device capable. (again, MS is actually doing this. I didn't post a link just for fun)

Those companies can't compete, but you MUST acknowledge that they are challengers. They are being beaten, but they are still there putting up a small fight. MS streaming from PC would overstep them completely however, both performing their functions and a lot more, while simultaneously repositioning themselves to begin the battle with Valve.

It's really elementary when you think about it.

you do realize the end game is cloud computing over the air.... This will actually be the end of everybody else but MS in this current stage and amazon maybe...

the one thing we agree on is they don't need the box... They just need to occupy the space long enough before HW becomes secondary.... In the long run PS is peaking now and XBox has judge headway... Down the line you'll have a bunch of terminals hooked up to a few add ons streaming content.... But at that game MS is in better position and XBox is essential as a place holder... I don't give a damn if down tue line it's an XBox hurricane or ARM cloud terminal running windows infinity 2025... Bottom line MS is here to stay in the consumer space and entertainment business and for that the need XBox for the time being

because they have no chocie.

every other brand and product they have in consumer electronics is now a failure and either dying or dead... not quite the same as the pc os space is it really.

Must be the same reason Xbox is integrated into Windows 10. #KeepHoping

Hoping is for fanboys, facts are for businessmen.

Like I said, this is the most recent in a long long list.

My thread about the xb1 designer being fired from ms? Not a single post.

There's definitely hope on vgc, but the writing is on the wall.

Honestly that guy probably deserved to go.

Xbox1 ended up costing like 100$ more than the PS4 to make, yet it has like 50% less GPU.

Look at how big and bulky the consol is too, your telling me they couldnt have designed the the houseing for the machine or the layout of components better?

Microsoft rebrands, merges, and then divides again more than any company I can think of. It's so annoying, especially when it takes them forever to get all the links straightened out.

I actually believe this to be a mistake on Sony part.  It will cause the same issue MS had with branding everthing Xbox when they are trying to put their products on everthing that will host them.  People will believe you need to be on the Playstation or locked into the Playstation environment in order to use their products.  Even if this is the case, its best not to heavly promote that feeling from consumers.

I definitly agree that the Xbox and the living room push from MS is not going anywhere.  Maybe a dedicated console will not be the direction when the next gen rolls around but then again who needs a dedicated console if you can push everything from your PC.  The thing is, making a server that is plug and play will be the direction and streaming your games from it to your TV is the future.   The one big key I believe why this will be the direction MS goes is how the OS is run from a VM.  This will allow MS to easily provide backward compatibility with the X1 while host that VM on a PC.  Using fast switching, your server will be able to switch between different VMs and stream that to your TV, giving you a dedicated game machine and a powerful media PC.

Sony does not have anything else. It was a needed change for Microsoft. Me and buddy at work got to talking about music sevices and I told him I use Xbox Music. First thing he said is that " I dont have an Xbox". He had no idea it was also on PC.
