Not to defend the practice of piracy at all, but I do have some aquaintenances that engage in what I consider 'excessive' downloading. One of them had downloaded Bioshock last year just a week after I had bought my copy... feeling a little irritated (especially since Bioshock was such an incredible game) I asked him why he didn't just buy the game.
His response was that he already spends all of his disposable income on media and entertainment, and he literally has no more money to spend without dipping into either food or apartment rent. At that point he says it's just a matter of which games he'll decide to buy and which games or movies he'll decide to download.
Not what I expected to hear, but I could believe it considering his massive dvd and game collection. It did make me wonder about claims of losses by the entertainment industries. This guy is probably in the minority of pirates, but he's already giving up 90% of his income to entertainment. There's simply no more blood to squeeze from his rock, so to speak.
I have a feeling the truth of actual losses is a number somewhere in the middle - people that download just for the novelty without any intent to play, people that download because they're addicted and are out of money, and people that download because they're cheap and really are thieving.
