Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion: 8th generation is the worst generation in video game history

I'll just say that it's extremely early to determine this console generation is the worst thing ever since the 1983 video game crash because one of the reasons being that they're remaking the hell out of last-gen games. I'm sure they'll run out for games to remake. I'll reiterate that it's still very early, and that there are good games incoming for both PS4 and Xbox One. And don't get me started on those games that are still to be announced. Sure, like anything else worthwhile, we have to wait.

Oh, and have I mentioned that it's still too.early?

everybody is focusing on sony, not just me. read the posts. we are all using sony as an example because something needs to be used as an example. for example: "why not just port all ps3 games to ps4" yes, i used sony bcause that is the common example that we are using throughout this thread to make points. everybody is talking about sony, and everybody also  knows that x1 is getting these shitty remasters as well

Where were your complaint threads for these?

Outside of Xenoblade 3D, a game that you can only get at a high price, are you comparing remasters of 10-15 year old games that looks better and with changes in its gameplay to upres ports of one year old games?

I played Morrowind and Conkur: Live & Reloaded for the first time on my 360.

Huh. I didn't know that.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

That depends, are you claiming all XBO/PS4 remaster/remakes are just "upresed"? Because if you are...

I'm late to the party, but here are my two cents:

Is the 8th generation a disappointment? Yes. Has it continued many of the negative trends begun in earnest during the seventh generation, including micro-transactions; online paywalls; the proliferation of DLC, on disc or otherwise; day one patches; out-of-control development and advertising budgets; lack of backward compatibility, which opens the floodgates to last-gen ports and "remasters"; and, in the case of many high-profile studios, a deep focus on graphics, character design, and story at the expense of involving, rewarding gameplay? Yes.

But is it the worst generation in video game history? Far from it. The first generation, with its experimental hardware and Pong clones, provided a dreary list of games. The second generation brought the world many ground-breaking and revolutionary titles but, in general, the truly great games were few and far between.

So the 8th generation is certainly better than the 1st and 2nd generations. By the time it ends, the 8th might also be better than the 3rd and 7th generations. Will it touch the greatness of the 4th, 5th, and 6th generations, in my opinion the golden age of video games? Probably not. But who knows. Among the detritus that defines modern video gaming are a handful of masters -- including Shigeru Miyamoto, Hidetaka Miyazaki, Hideo Kojima, Koichi Hayashida, Eiji Aonuma, Tetsuya Takahashi, Neil Druckmann, Michel Ancel, and Ken Levine -- who are capable of making masterworks with the proper talent, funding, and support.

tl;dr version: When historians look back on the period between 2011 and 2019, they'll probably see a middling generation that perpetuated the decline of the industry begun during the seventh gen, not the worst in the history of the medium.

Are those XBO/PS4 "remasters" in the same vein as the Zelda Remasters? If so, then I'm wrong.

I agree that 8th gen was disappointing but I don't really think that this is the worst gen of them all...

I agree..... at a certain point. Not really the worst, but hardly one of the best.
7th, 6th and 5th generations caused more surprise to me than the current generation.
This generation has too much remakes, I feel a certain lack of new ideas and concepts, too much yearly iterations of games that remain similar, lack of variety, too many shooters, too many games focused on action rather than strategy or tatics etc. Less variety of sports, fighting, racing, rhythm, puzzle games....

If last generation is anything to go by this thread is incredibly premature. The PS4 just got its first highly rated exclusive and its already got the highest number of games rated above 90 on metacritic. Games like Arkham Knight, The Witcher and Uncharted aren't too far away either. Throw in regulars like Forza, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Gears,Halo,Street Fighter,Tekken,Gran Tourismo and Final Fantasy and we basically haven't even scratched the surface. This is also ignoring TONS of new IPS that we aren't even aware of! For Gods sake, in many ways this gen has barely even started. All these threads should be necro bumped at the end of this gen as a lesson for future generations.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Are those XBO/PS4 "remasters" in the same vein as the Zelda Remasters? If so, then I'm wrong.

Let's take a look at that.

Halo MCC does:
All 4 games remastered with new textures, new models, lighting engine, physics, particle effects, all with the option to switch to the original games mode on the fly, bringing al of the original games maps (and some new ones) back at the same time, maps that could no longer be played since support for the original games online functionality had ceased, integrating deeply an entire community channel and programming, as well as new modes, features and achievements across the board.

GTAV does:
Higher quality textures, geometry, higher keyframed animation and more plentiful AI in the form of cars, pedestrians, better lighting, water and cloud processing, first person view, much improved online mode with additional gameplay modes, greatly improved performance, draw distance and adjusted physics, particle effects and so on.

TLOUR does:
Full 1080p at a fairly stable 60fps, photo mode, well thought out and implamented DS4 integration, original titles DLC included by default (Left Behind singleplayer expansion and Territories / Reclaimed Territories map packs), Commenrary mode and additional difficulties, native remote play capability.

Tomb Raider Definitive addition does:
Included DLC, Entieely new character model, TressFX hair simulation from the PC version, improved character models for all allied/enemy characters, environmental destruction (structures that were static in the pc/ps3/360 versions can now be visible damaged/destroyed), 4x resolution on textures, native 1080p resolution, much higher framerate, Kinect support for voice commands to perform skills, bring up the map, navigate relic menus, switch ammo types, kinect-controlled relic manipulation, same voice controls for ps4, as well as guesture controls for ps camera users, active use of the lightbar to illuminate your play area with a flame effect lighting when carrying a torch in dark areas, use of the ds4 speaker to convey specific sounds to the player, support for sensing remote play and enabling touch support actively when playing via remote play on vita.

Metro Redux:
Ranger mode, new lighting and physics engine, advanged enemy ai, improved combat and stealth mechanics, better weapon handling, dynamic weather, new animation sets and detailing for characters, higher level of dynamic destruction on environments, improved smoke, fire and particle effects, new melee animations, survival play, spartan play, all previous dlc for both games included.

But hey, if "just upressed" is what you want to believe, don't let me stop you.

People like to conveniently ignore the more intricate changes made to these games when arguing the toss over "urgh just remakes", the simple truth is that many of them add a lot to improve the originals and provide good value for both first time players and repeat buyers, my point isnt to say "zelda remasters suck", just that, "nintendo remasters games too", in both cases, nintendo and xb/ps, the remasters can be great.

Just tired of people writing them off as nothing more than "upressed" cashgrabs.
