Why is there need for a new genre to describe Dark Souls/ Demon's Souls/Bloodborne? They fit perfectly fine in the ARPG genre. Your comparison is more like Halo vs. Call of Duty moreso than Resident Evil vs. Call of Duty. Just because they have features unique to their series and they have clones does that make them part of some distinct genre. 


They are in the same genre as The Elder Scrolls games, arent they...?

Yes. Both are role-playing games with button/key-mapped controls, in other words: ARPG's. I don't see this as a problem either. Destiny, Bioshock, and Battlefield are all considered first person shooters despite having different scopes and specific features.

Bloodborne will probably sell 2-2.5 mil lifetime, Xenoblade X anywhere from 800k-1.5 mil lifetime.

There's this little known PC game (I'd say even gem) from 2001 called Severance: Blade of Darkness...you'll be surprised how much Souls have similar feel, though not really copies of course.

Tbh, it's not even only game from around that period in similar fashion.
