Nintendo stoped major wii software development in order to start developing WII U GAMES. Right now, 3ds software has slowed down and wii u's hasn't, so it makes sense that they are switching to a new handheld.

"The next handheld, if that's what NX is, will almost certainly be a good deal more powerful than the 3DS too, we're talking HD/Wii U/PS3 sized projects."

I think you meant HD/PS3 sized projects. But so what? it seems they already started development since 2015, given 3ds slowing down in releases. And the unified architeture of their next gen systems will speed things up for them.

Actually, the focus on 3DS is more likely the reason Nintendo struggled to get their earlier Wii U titles out the door on time. They clearly threw all their resources at the 3DS in 2011.

As you also say, they then panicked and have thrown most of their resources at the Wii U leaving the 3DS without much of note outside the expected releases. This is why they need that unified architechture. I can't wait.

No, the wii resources went to wii u and HD development was the cause for few games at launch/ launch window. who panicked? the 3ds only slowed down in games recently, and that's perfectly in line with a shift from resources to the new handheld.

They'll definetely benefit from a unified architeture, though.

Do people really think Wii U will last 6 years?
Both N64 and GameCube with better sales have a lifespan of only 5 years and suddenly Wii U will lasts 6? Wii U is not the same as the Wii and it will be replaced soon.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

If Wii resources went to the Wii U. Why did Retro get dragged into Mario Kart 7?

I'd also highly question Nintendo's inability to get anything out in the first half of 2013. A mini game compilation and HD version of a 2D platformer can't have been all their resources could pump out between 2010 and 2013...

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

very unlikely, whethere nintendo likes or not they must keep giving support to their console until the 5-6 year cycle has concluded or else they risk the possibility of losing trust and customers, and nitnendo is pretty aware of this outcome since they were rivals with sega

Yes it is. Don't expect many AAA WiiU games after Zelda U in December.
Iwata has shifted all his focus on the mobile gaming market.
He has silenced Shigeru, made him stop any projects for wiiU. It's all about the NX (iOS/Android), slowly progressing to the N-phone.

LOL@ doomed topics fo Nintendo abandon WII U... Nintendo is still supporting the Wii U heavily. They've even hinted at various pieces of unannounced software for E3 2015.

Nobody is doubting that the will announce some Wii U software at E3 2015. But will they also announce some Wii U software at E3 2016? And will the Wii U software be the focus of their announcements and presentations at E3 2016?

I see it this way and I'm confident it will happen:
2016 3DS NX successor reveal.
2017 NX successor released first half.
2017 NX Home (wii U successor) revealed.
2018 NX Home released.

Done. I would be happy owning a U for 5 yrs.

NX if it is a console won't be released until 2018 imo, they said they were going to talk a bit more about it next year that's all. If you remember they said in 2013 they'd talk a bit more about QOL in 2014 and they did at the investors meeting but QOL itself has yet to be unveiled this will probably be the same with NX, we probably won't see it unveiled until 2017 earliest with a release date of late 2018. We may not see it until 2018 tbh.

All Nintendo did tbh was just reassure everyone that even with the DeNA partnership they're still focused on dedicated gaming platforms, it doesn't mean a new console is coming anytime soon.

I see it going like this.

2016 3DS NX successor reveal and release
2017 Wii U successor reveal and release.
