Forums - Nintendo - What Nintendo should have done instead (in my opinion)

Fair enough - I think you are wrong about taking the attention away from hardware sales though. Many of the hardcore N fans have already or are seriously considering buying the hardware soon. The mobile games aren't meant for those people - they are meant to reach a new audience. People who abandoned hardware and consoles for strictly mobile gaming. If anything it only helps reignite brand recognition in this particular market.

worst idea ever.

nintendo does best with the casual audience which isn't on pc they are on tablets and phones. pcs are intimidating to that audience. that audience whats to play on a couch not a desk. they want easy, intuitive touch controls not complex keyboard and mouse.

nintendo would be better off going third party for ps4 and xbox then pc or better yet,.. tablets.

really, just the absolute worst idea i've ever heard.

As you may have noticed from my countless posts in other threads: I'm absolutely terrified by what Nintendo's new concept could turn into. But what should Nintendo have done instead? As many people seem to like their new concept (for whatever reason) I'd like to share my idea and would like to know what you all think about it.

In my opinion Nintendo should have given up hardware creation. No, they shouldn't produce games for the Playstation/Xbox. No, not for mobile devices either. The best thing would probably be to create a PC platform like Steam, UPlay or Origin. Think about it. Pretty much everybody has a PC, which would allow them to have access to a wider audience. And the typical Nintendo games aren't in need of an insane graphic card either. Many people do not buy Nintendo games because they are on consoles which they don't want to spend 200-300$ on. But if they'd create this free PC platform the sales of their games would probably increase a lot.

This new service wouldn't have to compete against any other platform as you can get Steam and all the other Steam-styled platforms as well without paying anything.

Now, there is the problem about the lack of games. They'd need to get quite a lot of games on the platform to make it stay relevant. To get this flow of games they should buy some other developers and increase the number of developers in the EAD team. The games which would get a lot of advertisement and hype would be the new games or games made by Third Parties which they paid for (games like Hyrule Warriors or Bayonetta 2). To get a consistent amount of games each week they would have to make several teams which port older games (mainly 6th to 8th generation, I'm tired of seeing the old Super Mario Bros. getting re-released again and again) and try to hire a company to port smaller mobile games as well (even though I dislike them). Maybe they could even attract some developers like Sega or Capcom to make games for it as well.

Any suggestions to further improve this idea? Do you like my idea or do you dislike it? Is it realistic? I'd love to hear your opinion on all of this.

This is what Sony was looking to do before the PS4 became so sucessful. It still may be their intention, and I think that many see this as the future of the industry. Nintendo would have to outright buy Capcom and Sega if they were going to try and hold down a competitive service like this on their own.

What's the reasoning behind releasing the titles on PC and not on PS4/XBO? There's really no reason to release your titles on the PC and not the consoles too.... apart from a vocal minority who don't want there beloved franchises tarnished by hitlers own consoles the ps4 and xbo.

They'd have to give some of their revenue made off of these games to Sony and Microsoft. And pretty much everybody who has a PS4 and XBox One would have access to this new platform as well.

Theyd have to give revenut to steam and origin and uplay, the exact same amount of revenue

Well Nintendo have said their new DeNA service will be on consoles, mobiles AND PCs, so it may very well be a step towards a Steam type system.

But I dont think Nintendo will push pure digital sales.... although that does make a lot of sense for the Nintendo Fusion concept.

its hilarious to me that the OP seems to fundamentally not understand Nintendo's audience whatsoever. PC gamers generally are fairly hardcore or people who just play there in their limited free time since they are working on the computer anyway

what sells for Nintendo (audience wise) are the families and casual audiences, who want to play in the open in a room together. also they sell (handhelds) well to the on-the-go likes to game whenever younger crowd. neither would be logically targted with the PC move you are suggesting

I am not sure if mobile is a smart move, I think if they integrated a mix of a phone and handheld that might be a good move however if they are specfiically going to allow their games onto mobiles in general then they should severely limit it. they still are insanely successful with handhelds and obviously I think they are smart to maintain their hardware business in general

as soon as you abandon hardware not only do you lose a lot of control over WHAT you do as a video game company, but the quality in general seems to dip too (cough Sega)

It wouldn't work. There is already Steam among many others. The great thing about Steam or GOG, humble bundle ect is that they all offer their own as well as third party stuff. Nintendo would not be able to do it on their own, even if they did buy a few companies. The reason they are trying to unify their platform is so there will be a greater catalogue with less time between releases. Along with that, what these others do is give insane deals, which would cut the profit margin for Nintendo big time since it would all be first/second party.

There is no reason to be freaked out by what is happening. Read up on it more and you should be fine. This is actually putting them in an extremely strong position.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Um, you're talking about Nintendo's former audience. They've already lost all these consumers after the Wii.

People are misunderstanding this whole Nintendo on mobile announcement. I keep reading comments where people are convinced that the next big Mario release will happen on mobile. Or that they will now all of a sudden get to play SMB64 on their tablet...

Nintendo stated that they are not porting titles and that anything that is being developed is to be optimized for mobile gaming....

"only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system"

I never thought that they would release major games for mobile devices. But these games will hurt their hardware sales as they take the attention from the consoles away. Also, the mobile gaming industry shouldn't be supported anyway. I'm tired of sucky F2P games.

Games like pokemon shuffle aand the like are not going to dissuade someone from buying a console. However it seems since it has been such a success on the 3DS, we will likely see more of the mobile type games on the consoles side of things.

You seem to be misunderstanding much of what was announced.

Isn't the bolded kind of selfish? Many people enjoys playing on their smartphone including me. Square Enix constant releases of the DragonQuest games means there is a demand for console like exp game on the smart devices.

And if you're tired of the sucky f2p games then don't play it. There are games with console like exp games in smarphones. Almost all of the Telltalegames are available on the appstore, Dragon Quest 1-8 are also there, Ace Attorney Trilogy and Dual Destinies, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite HD, The Banner Saga, Knights of the Old Republic and theres alot more.
