Because it likely will be fairly successful. Which unfortunately means over time I think Nintendo's focus will become more and more smartphone/casual centric. That's where the money is. 

Plenty of people I'm sure will buy Mario Kart iOS, Animal Crossing iOS, Nintendo Land iOS, etc. 

Oh, I've seen it coming... Iwata wasn't strong enough to stop this. Mobile market will give them profits short-term, not long-term. This will damage a lot their handheld division...

I think it can be anything, really. they just needed to announce something so people don't yell Dooom on Nintendo exiting hardware production.

Yeah I thought when he was talking about NX he meant a platform to game on mobile such as Google Play or the App Store for Nintendo, to be fair Im not listening that closely
