Forums - Sony - So I watched my first Blu-ray movie tonight...

and was pretty underwhelmed. I was expecting the heavens to part and beam down the TRUE high-def experience, but that didn't happen. Maybe it's because I'm just your run-of-the-mill layman who can't smell 1080p vs 1080i from a mile away, but it basically looked the same as a DVD to me, and my sister (who was watching the movie with me) even openly said: "It really doesn't seem any different than a normal DVD." Don't get me wrong, I still love my PS3 unconditionally, but I definitely won't be wasting my money on "going Blu," and can't see how this could really push PS3 sales over the top as hidef tvs penetrate the market more and more.

$4 Bootleg DVDs = <333; $30 Blu-ray w/ incrimental quality difference = =/

*If any of you were wondering, I watched "The 300"

some movies really have better quality on blu ray,

depends on which ones

i think the ps3's blu ray is weaker than a regular blu ray player (i think im not sure)

Well for one, that movie doesn't show off Blu-ray too much, and secondly, what kind of TV do you have. And I'd be willing to bet you might have your output settings wrong on your PS3.

Please provide details so that we can show you the greatness of Blu-ray.

The PS3 has superior specifications compared to stand-alones. I think the only thing stand alones beat it on is sound quality, but we're talking hardly noticieable.

300 is probably the worst movie to judge it buy as the movie is naturally grainy due to the entirety of it being filmed inside a montreal warehouse.  The graininess comes from the fact that everything that is not the actors was generated by computer

i wasnt sure, i remember reading something that said that, so i guess im wrong lol

Do you have it hooked up through HDMi cables? and do you have your output set to 1080p?

What username said. The PS3 is the superior Blu Ray player on the market, but honestly, the HD format war was overrated to start off with. I am purple - Blu and HD DVD - and it is a lot sharper but that's it. And honestly, I won't be snagging more Blus until I see movies that I really, really want.

To me, I have my LCD hooked up to my DiSH DVR and I absolutely love watching Star Wars and other movies in HD. However, based on the price of admission, you had better really like movies to buy a Blu Ray player right now. I do think you won't see mass adoption until prices hit under $200 and movies a wii bit more than $15 a pop.

I will date myself with this - but I remember my uncle paying over $200 for a cassette WalkMan. I was like 'That is soooo cool.' I wonder if he still has it ...

And I won't even talk about my dad spending $1,500 on a 150mhz AST PC with a 5gb hard drive.

You have to pay to play to be an early adopter. I am not shocked you were underwhelmed - welcome to the club - and I am talking about HD DVD and Blu Ray.

Actually, the graininess was added purposely. But I agree, it is one of the worst looking movies of the Blu-ray library.

I might suggest an animated movie, they are probably the best to compared on DVD and Blu-ray. Cars for example looks amazing in 1080p.

Happy Feet, Cars, Night at the Museum, Ratatouille, 3:10 to Yuma, and the Spiderman's all are on the upper end of good looking movies.
