Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bloodborne impressions after 40hrs! SPOILERS (EDGE)

For the record, I was not complaining (speaking for myself only). I know what the game is, I know what to expect, and I know that it is not a game for me.

As I said originally, I lack both skill and patience for it.... So, I do not want to play a game at a slower pace, get killed constantly in hope to beat it eventually... I don't find that fun. I play games like GTA, Tomb Raider, Far Cry, Dying Light etc., ones I can enjoy while progressing without frustration. I tried Lords of the Fallen, as people said it is similar to DS, and gave up after two bosses. It was hard, I died a lot, but that's not why I quit. I'm sure had I persevered, I would have beaten the game....but I just couldn't muster the patience to progress at a snail's pace...

No need for Dark Souls fans to feel upset by my preferences. Bloodborne looks like a wonderful game...I just don't think I would enjoy 40+ hours of dying, dodging and taking it very slowly...

I hope all fans enjoy it, I actually hope it becomes GOTY, I just know I will never play it.

I could understand you not wanting to play something because you might not enjoy it, but I still suggest giving it a go. I was intimidated when I started playing Catherine (and for the record, that game does feature difficulty modes but trust me when I say that easy is harder than most of the games out there), but I eventually could overcome it and finish it. I had a great sensation after making it through, and I guess the ridiculously high difficulty was a big barrier for most players, but I guess that's how the developer wanted it.

I do love difficulty, but I don't like to be annoyed. For example, I suffered more than enjoyed the ride in I wanna Be The Guy.

I understand you. I played Catherine. Great game, great story. Played on easy, but I never managed to get past chapter 5 (if I remember correctly). I remember spending an entire evening on it, repeated it for almost 2 hours, then deleted the game. The frustration of retrying the same level over and over was simply stronger than my interest in the rest of the story (and I really was very interested).

I don't have much time to play games, so I'd rather play them easy-breezy and have fun, than bite my fingernails in frustration for 40+ hours.

This dumb myth that Souls games are insanely hard, a grind and "masochistic trial and error bullshit" is really getting old.
The thing is Souls games CAN be played as trial and error games if you decide to run head long and not play attention.
But that doesn't mean that's the ONLY way to play these games, being careful will minimize deaths during a playthrough.

As long as you progress slowly, don't attract more than 1-2 mobs at a time, manage your stamina, block enemies and circle around them for backstabs, it's easy as hell.
Same deal for bosses, just hug them and move to the right and most of the early ones don't even require you to roll, they will simply miss with most attacks.

Also, many bosses have clear shortcuts you can open when you reach their general area you can simply run back to them without needing kill any other mobs.
Effectively you only need to beat an area once and you're done with it unless you're looking for rare drops. And on subsequent playthroughs when you know where the shortcuts are you can just run by most enemies and open them up, that's how these "60+ hours games" can be beaten in 45 minutes by speedrunners.

Ironically games like DMC3+4, Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising are harder then all the Souls games when played on their "Hard" setting.

This.  If you approach the game like any hack and slash game , you are going to die alot.  Enemies are quickly predictable if you carefully pay attention to their movement.

Only that D* Souls games, and I suppose Bloodborne as well, aren't "punishingly brutal". Not generally speaking at least. Only Demon's Souls on level 1-1 has been, basically because one couldn't level up. Yes, they may be hard, especially for new entries. They have a long learning curve. But while I took 9 hours to beat 1-1 in Demon's Souls, I could go reach the first boss in DS2 without even dying in a fight. Just by some lame mistakes.

Still, they are RPGs. The easy mode somehow is there. Just grind to level up and upgrade your gear. Or if you want to make them really trivial play online and summon like mad.

As for the "self-conceit and elitism".. Please. The games are praised and loved simply because they have the best fighting system for action RPGs out there. Well, not to mention that the setting is lovely. If people would rather slice air or waste hours chatting in that retarded 1st person view in Skyirm and the likes, their loss.

Id say theres definitely a portion of the fanbase that has an air of smugness and elitism when it comes to the souls games.

I for one thoroughly enjoyed playing demons souls and dark souls, especially the worlds created for them, but the difficulty almost killed those games for me. I just don't have the patience and had to be in the right mood/have a lot of free time to waste before i got around to playing them. For that reason I haven't played dark souls 2 yet.

Hearing that this game is harder has pushed me away from picking it up day one... I secretly was hoping that it might be toned down just a little from the souls games. However it looks good so im sure ill eventually be in the zone and pick it up.

DS2 has not one but 2 different rings, ring of life/soul protection (and there are quite a few of them) that minimize to 3K/6k souls the cost of dying. Just pocket money. They even keep the humanity. The first ring is acquired quite early. So yeah, that's another sort of easy mode. Actually it also has an hard mode. Just join the Covenant of Champions in Majula, and the difficulty of the game switches to something like the next new game (from NG to NG+, for example).

Regarding Bloodborne my understanding is that the combat won't be harder. The exploration will. There will be more traps, mobs jumping on you from nowhere. Like those slimeys in the ceiling in Dark Souls. :)

The one thing I'm nervous about is that there won't be much customization. only 12 weapons in 40 hours? One thing I loved about souls was that I never ran into the same character.

That's 40 hours and still not complete. We also don't know how thoroughly they've been playing it but we do know they haven't played the Chalice dungeon. And what would be a good way of getting people to go online? By making some of those 'rewards' they spoke about, actual weapons.

Each weapon is also unique and is basically 2 weapons in one considering they change.

You also have gems you can enhance your weapons with. I think this game is going to be more about skill and timing though. Kind of like a cross between Souls and Devil May Cry.

I'm in.

Looks like it but it challenges veterans of the series because the playstyle is different. You could have an advantage if you're not used to the Soul's playstyle.

if anyone ever wondered how big a Cleric Beast is...
