CD-I. 8*>. Seriously, Nintendo once let its characters out to another console. It was a disaster.
This query would have made much for sense at the end of last console cycle than it does now. It makes more sense to ask Xbox 360 fans if they would follow Master Chief than this (I would use a PS3 example as well, but Sony does not have any exclusive iconic character).
I would think that people would be apt to buy those games and follow the console. But it would depend on several factors, including who make the games and what hardware existed.
And I agree with the statements about Sega. However, the model which was put forth -- which was the same one some people thought Nintendo should follow two years ago -- was to be agnostic and support everything and make money on your superior software. This missed the point that first-party expertise is often as important in making good games as is the quality of the IP (For example, Sony's MLB The Show 2008 is more highly rated than the PS3 version of the mulit-platform MLB 2K8 by 2K Games (ironically, which was once part of Sega).

PS -- I would not be surprised if Nintendo bought Sega and made them a second-party developer. If for now other reason, to gain control of those IPs. I know that goes against what I have said earlier. But Sonic still means something and it might be good to prevent your competition from having access to that (and other) IPs.
I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |
