xbox live started just some months later when seganet went offline and was 6$/€ per month

Yeah, MS made bank from the original xbox. /s

it failed but because of expensive hardware which they dropped down to compete with the ps2, xbox hardware was more expensive as the console was made almost like a pre built from wallmart etc. instead being carefully designed and devoloped like the ps2 or gamecube

There was no outcry. People just didn't subscribe and then Sega went under. Just like they shouldn't subscribe to Sony or Microsoft's services. People are pretty stupid though.

maybe they went under because they tried to be our internet service provider? Pretty fucked idea by sega imo. I think this burned them a lot of money

i dont think it was that of a good consoles, espacially now. It lacks exclsuives, most of the games on the dreamcast you can play them on different consoles. The only exclsuives left are D2 and Shenmue 1 which are intresting to me. And its also good to play a view defentive console versions like dino crysis 1, but other than that there arent any reasons to have a dreamcast.

Most? That's quite the exaggeration. The Dreamcast had an incredible library considering it lasted less than two years on the worldwide market.

yeah but a lot of that was ported to the other consoles

SegaNet Launches

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/seganet-launches/1100-2625699/

Today Sega.com launched the Dreamcast's online gaming network, SegaNet.

"The future of gaming is online, and only SegaNet can take gamers there," said Brad Huang, president and CEO, Sega.com. "SegaNet is building the first online console gaming network for gamers across the country and has permanently changed the face of the gaming industry."

As was previously reported by GameSpot News, to encourage consumers to give SegaNet a try, the price of the Dreamcast console has been dropped to US$149. Those who sign up for 18 months of SegaNet service at $21.95 per month will receive a rebate for the entire $149 Dreamcast purchase price and a free Dreamcast keyboard. Those who have purchased a Dreamcast console previously will be awarded with 50 free hours on SegaNet to try out the service. PC owners may also use SegaNet as their ISP service, as the network has been designed from the ground up to provide low latency for online gameplay or Internet browsing.

if you adjust inflation thats $29.79 per month. So where was the outcry back then about consoles charching to play online?

PSN and xbox live are a lot cheaper now its 5 or 6 dollars based on 1 year while sega wanted you to pay for 18 months. 18 months? Thats 396$ you had to pay.

Besides that, it was actually a very shaddy deal by sega as the dreamcast didnt last that long. I am pretty sure a lot of peoples subscriptions hasnt reached the 18 months as sega leaved the console bussines somewhere in that timeline.

The proof is in the pudding. Many just objected by not paying. Many of those that did were part of that deal that was mentioned. LIkely a large part of why the Dreamcast fell off in sales. It was aslo a different time. A time where consoles on the net weren't much of a thing at all.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Simple, it was because no one cared about it back then, now online is the selling point for a lot of games nowadays

I am pretty sure i didnt have to pay a dime to play online on te dreamcast. Maybe it was different in the US? For europeans the outcry is very justified.

Also... cmon... online play is free on the PC. How do you justify the same thing beeing a P2P on consoles? The cost of the servers is minimal and its off set by the boxed/digital sales. But alas, we must be made to pay not only for the product, the hardware for the product but aswell the permission to play the product. On my book, that really isnt acceptable.

This.

This is part of the reason why I feel gamers are way to spoiled today. Gaming has never been so affordable as it is today, yet gamers complain about paying 5$/month for great online services. Who cares if it's free somewhere else, it's only 5$! You get free games, discounts left and right and massive catalogues of games to choose from.
