Was this thread inspired by the new nostalgia critic editorial?
In answer to your question, no of course not, If I loved something in the first place then that love is not going to go away simply because alot of of people also love said thing, and I usually don't fall for any hype for any games coming out unless It's a nintendo game, because they always deliver the hype I give them.

It was and I thought that what he said about popular movies and the backlash they get can also apply to popular video games.

One of the most important factors when playing a videogame ( or watching a movie or reading a book) is the ability it has to surprise the consumer.
Hype kills that.
So, yes, hype is a bad thing.

I think this applies more for movies/shows than video games. I just watched a video by Nostalgia Critic questioning the same issue and used Frozen as an example (link here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9XR0v1LRE4 ). My Little Pony had a similar effect on me a few years ago, it was good but dear lord it was plastered all over the Internet.

I can't think of a single game in my library that's sort of an obscure gem and eventually got a cult following and exploding. Closest thing to this that comes to mind might be Persona 3 & 4. But I find this debatable because the game seemed to be pretty popular by the time I came around. Even then I didn't enjoy the game any less.

Usually not.. I only get hyped on games that I really want so it would be fun nonetheless.. unless the game was TERRIBLE then I would be sad.

Good point and welcome to the site. Can put I your post and link in the OT since this thread is actually inspired by this video?

Hype never really affected me as far as I'm concerned! Hopefully things will stay that way because hype can be a true bitch at times!
