I guess a Metascore in the 70's was predictable in retrospect.
Kirby games typically do okay with critics for what they are, but tend to be less favored than other Nintendo platforming series. The only two Kirby games that have ever really won critics over were Canvas Curse and Epic Yarn. Even those games would probably do worse with critics in a more contemporary setting though. Canvas Curse was a hit largely because it was strangely revolutionary, being one of the first games on a major platform to make great use of touch controls. Touchscreens aren't exactly a new frontier anymore. Epic Yarn had the benefit of being a graphically stunning game and making better use of cooperative play than earlier 2D platformers on recent consoles. Rainbow Curse is nowhere near that level of beauty compared to its peers and has a somewhat meaningless art style in terms of gameplay.
Rainbow Curse is far from doomed. Return to Dream Land, Super Star Ultra, and Squeak Squad sold well with similar reviews.
