Forums - Nintendo - Which Micro SD Card should I use with my New3DS?

I couldn't transfer all my data from my 3DS to my New3DS, because the size of the microSD was to small. Luckily the partial transfer worked. However now I want to switch the microSD card for a bigger model. I used a 16GB on my old 3DS and it was nearly full. I think I should use a 32 GB now (I read in the manual that this size is supported). Are there any other points I should consider? Which manufacturer is recommended? Which Class should I buy? Hope you guys can help.

Something like this will work fine:

http://www.amazon.de/SanDisk-Ultra-microSDHC-Speicherkarte-SD-Adapter/dp/B00M55C0NS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1424169698

SDHC, Class 10, 48 mb/s, Most brands should be good. Keep in mind the screwdriver that you'll need, and the fact that SDXC cards and anything over 32GB aren't supported. Also, since you partially transfered, it sounds like you may need to take the 'via PC' route instead of wireless. In that case, you'll also need a memory card reader/adapter for both SD and micro-SD.

Cheers,

That's not technically true. I have a 128GB card that I use in mine as I buy games digitally and I am anticipating that NEW 3DS exclusive titles will be bigger in file size than the current titles. Nintendo only officially supports FAT32 format, which is only found naturally on cards up to 32GB. Hence why Nintendo has that disclaimer. Cards above 32GB use the solely Microsoft owned and developed format exFAT. And I imagine Nintendo would need to pay a licensing fee to Microsoft for it's use. To get around this though, you can format any SD card to FAT32 format and the 3DS will be able to read it. To do this you need to download a freeware program as Windows will only format the big cards as exFAT. I used the minitool partition wizard. :)

Interesting. It's not something the average consumer would work around but I definitely would. Doesn't quite make sense though that they wouldn't tell you to format your high capacity card, but I bet it's on Nintendo support forums somewhere, y'know "unofficially".

What are your biggest 3ds download titles yet?

Mine is "Luigi's Mansion 2" with 6754 "blocks" (860 MB) followed by "Ace Attorney 5: Dual Destinies" with 4432 "blocks" (560 MB).

You can fool it to support higher than 32GB

I checked on http://www.nintendonerds.com/guides/3ds/3ds-eshop-block-sizes-retail and http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=730057

The biggest would be:

"Monster Hunter Ultimate 3" 1.74GB 14,275 Blocks

"Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked" (too lazy to calculate) 9,188 Blocks

"Fire Emblem Awakening" 1.05GB 8,579 Blocks

"Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask" 790.75MB 6,326 Blocks

Thank you and all the others for all the hints. I managed to switch the cards and I am now redownloading my stuff from the eshop. (Will take a while ...)

This is pretty genius. Are there any consequences to reformatting a 128GB card to FAT32?
