Last gen, Nintendo sold nearly 100 million units of software that were based on fitness and education. Wii Fit sold about 45 million and Brain Age/Brain Academy also sold about 45 million and other games like Personal Trainer: Cooking & English Training each sold a few million. This was clearly a very big part of Nintendo's market last generation and something they are sorely missing on Wii U & 3DS.
Iwata has made it pretty clear that Quality of Life will be a pretty important part of their business and will emphasize on health/fitness/education l. So far the only QoL product we know of is the sleep tracking device but there will be other devices to be announced in the near future (probably will get some info at the investor meeting on Feb 17th).
Some ideas of products I think we could potentially see are some type of redesigned/rebranded Wii Fit device that doesn't require a game console and a children's tablet with educational software based on Nintendo characters that allows Amiibo support.
This fitness device could possibly be some type of motion-tracking device that hooks up to the TV and has a bunch of pre-installed workout/diet plans. Also it will probably be able to connect to the internet so that u can download new exercises and diet plans. Perhaps they will even have some sort of companion app for smart devices so u can track ur progress when away from home then sync them together when u get home. The device will probably be sold at a reasonably cheap price, in the $50-80 range with new workout/diet plans being available for download for anywhere $1 to $15.
The children's tablet will be similar to the Leapfrog LeapPad or the Vtech InnoTab. Those devices have various software based on Nickelodeon/Disney/Pixar characters so Nintendo could easily make such a device featuring characters from their franchises. Price the hardware similar to these devices so about $50-80 and have various software ranging from $1-15 for kids in the 3-6 year range. Perhaps they could even make a different form factor device that connects to the TV and plays all the same software. Incorporate Amiibo into these devices as well. If popular, this could be a good way to get young children familiar with Nintendo characters and make them want one of Nintendo handhelds/consoles when they get a little older.
Could such devices help Nintendo lure back the fitness/education crowd that they had with Wii/DS?
