Wow 600k less hardware and still outselling the competition in terms of software, good to see XBOX fans take pride in those attach rates.

A September release would probably be smart if they could pull it off. I'm not sure going head to head against Call of Duty in November is an amazing idea.

Destiny showed last year that the right software in September can lead to fantastic sales. If MS can do it I think they will, but they will equally not want to rush it out if it isn't ready, not after MCC.

Agreed. Halo 5 can't be fucked up under any circumstances.

Dying Light was the best selling game of January at retail!

Well deserved, it is a great game. Although of course it had no competition --- smart choice for a release date by WB.

That is most likely an indicator that PS4 owners buy more games digitally than XOne owners.

He's upset, isn't he?

So what he's saying is, the XB1 needs to be promotionally priced below the PS4 to have any chance of selling the same. Fair do's.

Thats one hell of a handicap.  Really, the Xbox One has to be lower all month in order to win?  What happens if Sony ever drops the price?

January 2015 NPD: PS4 outsells Xbox One as Dying Light tops software chart

.S.

Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Warner Bros. Interactive’s zombie-survival game Dying Light pushed total game sales to $625.7 million in January. That’s down 5 percent from $662.1 million in 2014. While software sales were up hardware was down big time from $239.6 million to $185.5 million. This is a reversal of the 2014 trend that saw hardware up nearly every month while game sales lagged behind. It is likely switching around now as the hardware market is settling into place.

We’ll get to the full software sales list here in a moment, but first we always like to point out that the NPD numbers are only representative of new physical games sold at U.S. retailers. While that makes up a huge chunk of the market, it does not include digital or mobile. With that in mind, you should probably only view these numbers and results as a snapshot of trends in a wider market.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the game sales.

Software

  1. Dying Light (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  2. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox One ,PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  3. Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
  4. Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
  5. NBA 2K15 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
  6. Super Smash Bros. (Wii U, 3DS)
  7. Far Cry 4 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  8. Madden NFL 15 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
  9. Destiny (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
  10. FIFA 15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, Wii, Vita, 3DS)

But how much of that is because for 1 week Xb one was priced $100 below the Jan 2014 price, and for 3 weeks it was priced $150 below the Jan 2014 price? That's a 23% decline, and the Xb one YoY price drop is ~38 based roughly on 1 week at $399 and 3 weeks at $349. When there is such a huge price difference for one of the major consoles then the revenue figure isn't a very good measure of health.

Harking back to page 1 with the Amazon software best sellers

pos title platforms ranks in top 100
1 Just Dance 2015 Wii, 360, PS4, Xb1, PS3, Wii U 8, 79
2 Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare PS4, X1, 360, PS3, PC 11, 17, 33, 59
3 SSB 3DS 3DS 12,
4 SSB U Wii U 19,
5 GTAV PS4, PS3, X1, 360 22, 54
6 Pokemon OR/AS 3DS 27, 29
7 Dying Light PS4, Xb1, PC 32, 68
8 Minecraft 360, PS3, Xb1, PS4, PC, PSV 39, 57
9 Far Cry 4 PS4, Xb1, PC 41, 63
10 inFamous: Second Son PS4 42,

Amazon got a 6/10 record of accuracy if you don't consider NPD position. But Amazon only got CoD right in terms of placement in the top 10. Conclusion: don't rely on Amazon for nationwide software trends.

I'm surprised that Xb one is doing the job for GTAV.

EA had January sales of under 1600 Wii U SW units for under $40k in receipts.

Surprised there were 1600 Wii U units left on shelves published by EA at this point tbh...

well of course sales will be pitiful

those are 2 year old late ports

Wasn't the last EA game on Wii U Need for Speed which released nearly 2 years ago?

While these replies aren't wrong, this does show a pretty massive discrepency with VGC numbers.  With only 3 weeks of tracking VGC shows nearly 4x higher sales for ME3/FIFA/Madden/NFS.  I'm guessing this wasn't the majority opinion a day ago.

This also once again shows the significant issues VGC has with long term tracking.  For games like this, we are unlikely to get regular sales updates, so these errors continue for years.
