Forums - Sony - What if the Vita was called PSP 2 or something like that?

No. Would likely be the same. It is still the Playstation Vita or PSVITA. They even marketed it well, there just didn't seem to be much consumer interest in it and it had a hefty price point when it came out.
I don't think a name change would have made any difference in this case.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

I would have bought one if it wasn't for the memory cards price. When I have unused 8gb SD sitting around, or if i needed to get a 32gb SD I could get a new one for $12. Yet its almost $60 for a 32gb vita one. that is a huge turn off for many educated gamers.

Since this thread caught on instead of the other one I'll post this here as well.

Here's what Vita needed to succeed imo

-$200 price tag. Don't bother with 3g. Don't bother with touch pads on the back. Don't bother with OLED screens. You'd have had it with the same internals.

-Lock down a major 3rd party. They really should have kept their good relationship with Capcom for Monster Hunter AND gotten Los Santos Stories or equivalent.

-GTVita! How has this not happened yet? They really couldn't have had too much faith.

-Come out BEFORE Nintendo! This ended up hurting them because they needed a head start and they really could've made some headway when 3DS struggled out the gate with the above changes AND it would have afforded them more of an opportunity to lock down those 3rd parties with a higher market share.

Duke of Playstation Plus

Warden of Platformers

I also thought it should have been called the psp 2. Would have had a better chance imo.

What if Wii U had been called Wii 2? The same on both cases, i think they would have sold better. But Sony and Nintendo wanted to be hipsters...

It has to do with the games.

If what you say is true then that will change soon according to this http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=969122

i dont think the name is the problem, nor the marketing, nor the game library. The problem is with the crazy expensive memory cards. How is a memory card going to be just as expensive as the unit itself. makes no sense

I don't think memory is a problem because PSP has expensive memory card too

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

When the PSP was popular standard memory cards weren't as cheap as they are now.  Games are also bigger now so they require a bigger memory card then most PSP games did which would turn into more of a reason for cost concerns.

Then the name would be less ironic when it flopped

I'm not going to wade in on the Wii U aspect here as some are trying to.

But on the Vita front, it's quite simply a product that's market migrated before release. A big selling point of the PSP was the media functionality (MP3s, UMDs etc.) now people can do all that on their phone (and better if you have a high end phone with 1080p display etc.)

They were never going to buy a Vita. The other piece of the puzzle isn't so much the games, it had pretty much everything everyone says the system should be getting now in the first 12 months to have been a big success if that was the problem.

It's just quite simply a case of the market for a dedicated handheld is dwinding rapidly and Nintendo fans are generally more keen on the idea still. Though as we saw from 2011, even they took an awful lot more persuading this time around than anyone anticipated.

Physical sales are still big part of games sales if you are not interested in buying games digital you don't need a big memory card 4 gb is enough to save games and even put some music
