Sony has introduced its new Digital TV (DTV) Tuner Module for mobile devices which include smartphones, tablets, automotive infotainment systems, navigation systems and PCs.

Sony claims that the DTV tuner module adopts a small size and superior reception along with low power consumption, which makes it an optimal candidate for inclusion into mobile devices. The SMT-EW100 series is the DVB-T2 compatible module, especially designed to be incorporated in the mobile devices and is the first module from Sony specialised for mobile usage.

The tuner module supports various types of digital terrestrial TV broadcast systems, including DVB-T, DVB-T2, DVB-T2 Lite, ISDB-T and ISDB-Tmm. Sony India will also offer the antenna along with software and technical support. Mobile device manufacturers will be able to incorporate a DTV feature into their products as well.

I don't get what that chip really is or does. Outside of playing TV on mobiles, what does it do exactly, and what can make it worthwile for Sony's business?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

some people would not agree with you, when every smart phone or tablet could not only be a a smart Device and now be a TV for real cheap for low cost to add to any new phone or tablet or hell now Pc's right on the mobo and cut down on costs in existing TV's cost for the chips they use, which makes more room for other chips and functions you may want to build into the electronic device.

smaller size is nice, but its nothing new, we had tv phones 10 years ago, the people dont want it, thats why its gone.

this is not just for only selective markets the chip design for instance be tweaked and is and can be used in Pal, or North America NTSC for instance!

interesting.

not sure i'd pick one phone over another with this inclusion but i would probably like to have it on my phone. watching tv on my commutes once i move and start using the train again would be a nice feature.

I don't see any use for this, especially in Germany and given how streaming is getting more popular year over year but let them develop - I guess they have other targets in mind.
