Forums - Nintendo - What if Mario had a different name?

if mario's name were Donald, how would this affect sales?

nintendo would have sold a lot more 0 0%

nintendo would have sold a little more 1 2.38%

no effect 20 47.62%

nintendo would have sold a bit less 3 7.14%

nintendo would have sold a lot less 18 42.86%

Total:42

me and my friend got drunk a couple weeks ago while we were setting up amiinos, and i was wondering what to name my mario amiibo. i decided to name him Donald.

and then we thought, what if nintendo decided to name him Donald? what kind of effect do you think that would have had on Nintendo's sales? do you think Nintendo would have sold as many Donald games?

and people would always be saying things like, "oh i cant wait until the new donald game comes out" and "there are too many donald characters in this game" and things like that. some of the games would be called donald party, new super donald bros, donald kart, and so on.

I also named my luigi patrick. so instead of mario and luigi, it would be donald and patrick. what kind of effect do you think that would have had on sales if they were called donald and patrick instead of mario and luigi? would things be completely different, or would it not have much of an effect on sales and we would all think its as natural as mario is to us today.

im interested to see what you guys think.

also, if you can think of any funny phrases that would be used if mario's name were donald, post them in this thread.  example: "nintendo releases too many donald games these days"

Super Merryo Bros

Something about the Italian plumbers exploring the pipes really worked for some reason lol

I think given there was already a famous cartoon named Donald (Duck) that may not have worked as well. Obviously we're all beyond familiar with "Mario" now so we're conditioned to believe it the perfect fit, but I do suspect it was a great choice regardless. Easy to say, remember, and fits the stereotype. :)

Super Tony Bros.

Jumpman?

I think it would have done just fine either way, Super Jumpman Bros. would have still been a phenomenon.

Super Bad-Ass Bros 3
Super Bad-Ass Galaxy
Super Bad-Ass World
Bad-Ass Party 10
Bad-Ass Kart 8
Bad-Ass Paint
"Nintendo only releases Bad-Ass games these days."

Or "Is that a new Bad-Ass series from Nintendo?"

Edit: I just realized "bad ass" is two words...

Dang it, it should be "Kick-Ass Paint"! Will edit later.

I am not sure how many of these would be as obvious to people in countries outside of Italy as Mario is to stereotype an Italian name.

It is near the end of the end....

For the user above me, I'm Italy.
You have forgot Daniele, Manuel, Massimo, Paolo, Luigi, Vincenzo ecc...

Super Harold's Magical Adventures.

Checks out. Would have sold millions.

He was called Jumpman when he fought with DK's dad so his name is hardly a factor in what made him sell.
