Something about the Italian plumbers exploring the pipes really worked for some reason lol
I think given there was already a famous cartoon named Donald (Duck) that may not have worked as well. Obviously we're all beyond familiar with "Mario" now so we're conditioned to believe it the perfect fit, but I do suspect it was a great choice regardless. Easy to say, remember, and fits the stereotype. :)
