This thread reminds me of the snail racing from Undertale.

We should start tracking the underground sale of used Wii U and vitas. Just for our amusement. Who wins that battle?! Lol

No one wins.  Especially not the people buying either system.

Did Sony ever disclose the "real sales" of the Vita? Or are VGC's 16-ishM sales the most reliable number (which I believe just fine) we know?

I don't think they declared the 16M because sometime before the end of life they were giving only combined sales.

Wii U was one of my best gaming experiences ever. The Gamepad being utilized in Arkham City still blows my mind. Miiverse was absolutely breathtaking. Some of the best Switch games were originally Wii U games (including Botw).

Granted most of them are virtual console games but I have more great games for that system than any other.

BotW was not originally a Wii U game.  It had a simultaneous release.

I did have some fun on the Wii U back in the day.  However it was never a great system, and all of the good games are now on the Switch.  The only reason to own a Wii U now is to play Wii games in HD.

No, Switch wasn't originally meant to come out only 4 years and 4 months after Wii U. Nintendo had to bump the release date of switch up a whole year and 8 months. If they stuck to their typical 6-year cycle then there's absolutely no way breath of the wild would have been delayed until switch came out and would have been a Wii U exclusive. Eventually there would be a port, no doubt, but breath of the wild was absolutely meant for the Wii U.

Yep, to deny Zelda BotW was originally a WiiU title is to deny reality.

Comparing these failing platforms feels so weird because I am pretty sure in both cases Sony and Ninty pulled the plug on these platforms well before they sold what they would have been capable of selling if the companies were 100% dedicated to them. So comparing sales in this case isn't really a measure of achievement but rather a measure of who gave up the first and where giving up the first in this case is probably the better business decision and resulted in more money/less losses for the company in the long term. For example, if Nintendo cut the gamepad and dropped the Wii U price in half while also making BotW a Wii U exclusive and doubled-down supporting the Wii U for  another couple of years, I am sure that the Wii U could have gotten close to Gamecube sales. It's just that the much better business decision was to drop the Wii U hard and go with the Switch. I am sure that it was something similar with the Vita where Sony just gave up on it once they realized that it would never come close to the PSP and putting more money into it would just be a loss.
