Actually, it started the moment it was announced in May, before any policy were revealed (so, how could it be about "boning" their customers?). Because of this picture

Now, had the new Xbox been stylized/advertised as "Xbox 1", "XBOne" wouldn't have happened. It'd be "XB1" (which, still, isn't how you call it i.e. "X1". Xbox, as a brand, is has always been abbreviated "XB", not "X"). But, like I said, it's because of the way the product is presented. Take it up with the designers of the logo. It's not our fault MS subsequently revealed policies that, indeed, "boned" us, just coincidence. Not the origin of the abbreviation.
Or, you can start referring to the 360 as "the Three Sixty", if we're gonna start changing how the product is officially shown as.
