The last thing they needed was to be shelling out more cash, they already lost money on Wii U for it's first year on the market. |
I know this is pretty late, but I don't think you realize just how much money Nintendo has. They have more than enough to withstand multiple Wii U level failures, not to mention that they are still making a killing off of their 3DS profit margins and software sales.

They may be able to survive heavy losses, but that doesn't mean losses are preferable. Didn't they post losses for the last few years, up until just recently?

Nintendo has more than enough money to be able to include a non-proprietary bluray drive in their console. I doubt it would effect their profit margin much at all, and it would at least allow it to keep up with the PS4/One when it came to amount of storage available for games. It's the least they can do since there's no HDD in the console. Not to mention that Nintendo tends to sell hardware at a big profit margin (much bigger than Sony or Microsoft), and the slight loss they made over the 2012-2013 period was easily overshadowed by the great profit they made this fiscal year and the Wii years.

Besides this one game though, it seems that 25GB is no obstacle for them; hell, most of their games would have fit on a Wii disc.

I own a 8GB Wii U, only extra memory is a 16gb flash drive plugged into the back. I never play digital, ever. The only downloaded games I have on my system are virtual console.

Me neither but I got the WW HD bundle, got Pikmin 3 for free during the MK8 promotion, bought MK8 dlc, bought ALTTP, Metroid Fusion and MPT.
I only have 7GB left I think.

I haven't had to use any external storage yet, I have 8.5GB still free on my Wii U's internal 32GB, and I may not even use that up as I don't plan to buy many digital titles.

True, but think of the multiplats that the Wii U could have gotten if it supported more storage. Third party devs hate optimizing games based on storage, and that combined with the fact that the Wii U is more than a bit underpowered is keeping third party devs away.
Overall though, you're right in that it doesn't effect the Wii U's main software developer (Nintendo) much. It does effect third party reluctance to develop on the console, but that's another story.
