Forums - Sony - Sony spending dollars (Almost a billion of them)

Well shit, if they are supplying Apple then they'd have to try really hard to make the business unit a failure.

They have been supplying Apple with sensors since the Iphone 5 IIRC

This is great news. Sony has basically turned its image sensors into there equivalent of Anroid or Windows. They are in nearly every device from every company, from TV's to phones, and game consoles and tablets. Plus they supply the medical field, movie studios, and high end photography. If they can continue to secure more market share, this can be an even more reliable source of massive income for their future. This move could easily help Sony from having to bow out of the TV and Cell phone market which will be very important in the near future.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

This could be a good thing considering that this will spand beyond just Sony products. We still don't know how much they sold SOE for (which was basically dead weight on the Playstation side other than PS2) so they may have already "broke even" in a sense. This will only lead to good things for Sony. You have to spend money to make money and as long as they continue to focus on where it counts, Sony should be fine.

Now if they invested it in TVs or phones...then I would be worried. What I would like to see is Sony do away with failing divisions and focus on electronic components accross multiple brands along side of their entertainment division, insurance, and Playstation. They have a strong hold in certain industries, so they need to focus on keeping those ahead instead of trying to revive fallen products.

Honestly I dont think they really should be risking a near 1billion dollar investment in one of their faltering branches. Definitely needed to ensure it doesnt suffer any further but not sure it the wisest thing to do right now.

Faltering branches? It isn't for their smartphones. They provide camera sensors for Apple, Samsung and many others. iPhones use Sony CMOS sensors on its cameras. And they also sell digital cameras and own most of the point-and-shoot market.

All these companies are selling more and more devices each year, Sony needs to keep ramping up their production capabilities to keep on with the demand. It's one of their most lucrative divisions right now.

Sony is also increasing production in a very popular single board PC...that now will have officially be supported by Microsoft as a windows 10 device!

Sony is creating 30 new jobs at its factory in Bridgend county as the technology giant quadruples its production to cope with the expected demand of a next generation computer.
It is taking on the extra staff at its Pencoed site after unveiling the new budget-priced Raspberry Pi 2.
The production rate will rise from 18,000 units to 80,000 units per week.
There are currently 70 workers at the plant.

"About 4.5 million Raspberry Pis have been sold since the board's release in 2012, and Upton expects to sell three million Pi 2 and model B+ models this year."

and

"The intention is you can take a Windows 10 application that you can run on Surface, PC, a Windows phone and now Raspberry Pi as well."

So, in reality (not video game fanboy fantasy land), Sony is actually doing okay for themselves.

There is a reason why investors have continued supporting them despite all their woes.

Well let's see: selling off a part of the company that A: was making pretty much only PC games with Licence UP's for those iP's that cost Sony a large cost in cash, and than those very same Free 2 Play games did not reach the goals set for the investment COST's required to really get a larger return on investment.

B: while also employing 1000 developers with a pay out on AVG: $80,000 or more a year/developer.

Vs' only needing to increase by 30 workers, and shifting from what was 18,000 units/week to now 80,000 units a week, with each of those units geared to sell for a retail price of $35.00 per/unit

With now those units are now a windows 10 certified Computer to dev Windows 10 apps to boot, and the windows 10 is free to put on the unit for dev's to sign up.

Yea it was no contest...Sony was asked to trim down COST's and overhead to return to profit. Add in now the increase in 20000 wfr's/month in CMOS sensors for Sony's Fab plant that will be getting rather large order's by Samsung and Apple..yeah it was not much of a stretch to see which was going to be sold and which was not.

What's so special about this news? The only good thing I understand from it is that they are still expanding.
