ds is not exactly catchy... this means next to nothing. clueless parents still refer to all video game platforms as "nintendo." same way you can xerox something on a non-xerox-branded scanner...

Everyone I know basically calls a Nintendo handheld a GameBoy, either because its what they grew up with or what their kids grew up with. The only people I can think of that know the DS brand better would be younger children, many who have moved on to Minecraft and Clash of Clans.

Would really see this scenario as the movie writers wanting the mother to sound a bit out of touch, makes you aware that she isn't 100% aware of technology or exactly what her kid is doing ie she is a mom trope. "Little Johnny off playing his Nintendos again?" yes.... yes he is playing gta5 on his Nintendos

This made me happy.

I call every Handheld a Gameboy, even my Vita. It's just stuck in my brain. The greater Definition of home consoles is PlayStation and I still call every MP3 Player a Walkman. Yes, I didn't even adopt to iPod, although I'm Kind of an Apple Fan. :p

It's just easier for people who aren't really into this stuff. I mean you also call every Smartphone a cell or something, don't you? (We say "Handy" in germany :P). You don't go around and tell people that you are calling someone with your HTC Desire HD or something.

My dad still thinks all video game consoles are called Nintendo's
