They do not specify a time point so I just assume it's as of now or thereabouts. In fact, they don't specify a source at all. Where did they get the number?

Hmmm. Lesson learned? Unless it's official MS/Sony/Ninty PR or a direct report from a known sales tracker (NDP, MCVUK), or linked to one of these two sources it's unlikely to be reliable.
