Forums - Gaming Discussion - Forum Archive: IGDA Japan says many developers are shifting their focus to Wii

In an article from the LA Times about the current state of console sales, the IGDA Japan (International Game Developers Association) president says many Japanese developers are shifting their focus to Wii:

Kyoshi Shin of the International Game Developers Assn. in Japan said many creators there were shifting their focus to the Wii.

Not too surprising. I would figure most game companies want their games to sell after all.

If you look at the past 12 to 18 months it becomes obvious why ...

Roughly 18 months ago (at TGS 2005) we were first introduced to the Wiimote. There was a massive polarized reaction as half the people who saw the video proclaimed it the greatest thing ever, and everyone else believed it was Nintendo's doom. The general consensus at this point in time was that Sony was not going to repeat the mistakes of Microsoft produce two SKUs and price their system at the "outrageous" $400. The expectation at this point was that the Revolution would be a Niche product and the PS3 would dominate.

Roughly 12 to 14 months ago Nintendo released the DS Lite, Nintendogs and Brain Age and changed the Japaneese market forever. The DS started selling faster than (practically) every system and moved more games than anyone could imagine; Nintendo expaneded the market beyond what anyone had ever expected.

12 months ago, at E3 2006, the PS3 was announced to cost $500/$600 and everyone was shocked. At the same time the Wii had 6 hour line-ups every day for the opportunity to try the Wii.

6 Months ago both systems were released and, while the Wii sells remarkably quickly the PS3 has sold far below expectations.

It is not surprising after how much has changed to see developers targeting the Wii as compared to the PS3.

Not to mention, all the Japanese game executives search over to VG Charts and see an 8:1 disparity in sales.

Heard that one before. Never actually saw much evidence.

No evidence at all!

What is funny about that list is nearly all of the titles are for dec 31. Isn't that usually just a placeholder when they have no idea when it will launch? If you take out those you have PS3 with 8 "known" titles for 2007 and Wii with 19. Then you hae 23 additional PS3 titles that are assumed to be in 2007 whearas the Wii has 54. In both cases the Wii has more than double the titles estimated for this year alone. What we really need to do is open this thread back up in October or November to see what is slated for 2008.

Yeah. That is definately happening in Japan, because it is a very different market. The Wii and DS Will dominate in Japan, but it is still too early to call it anywhere else.

As has already been shown completely and directly, Shane (in this thread, no less), many developers have done just that. Both EA and Capcom have explicitly stated that they have shifted development funds away from the PS3 and towards the Wii. If you need specific titles: Konami is currently developing Dewey's Adventure, which they stated was put into production because of the Wii's strong sales. Namco/Bandai is making "Space Station Tycoon" a Wii exclusive, and according to them, it's because of the Wii's strong (and growing) user base.

If you haven't seen evidence of growing third party support of the system, Shane, then you are deliberately closing yourself off. It's not one or two companies, or a few games: several major Companies have specifically and directly announced many new titles for the Wii, and many have explicitly stated that the system's strong sales are a motivating factor.
