Forums - Nintendo - Were the 1st downloadable Wii games for Wii U strategically chosen?

Does anyone think that it's no coincidence that the 1st 3 Wii games being made available to download on the Wii U are Galaxy 2, Punch-Out, & Metroid Prime Trilogy? Do you think this could indicate that Nintendo will announce new games for all those franchises at this upcoming E3? I think this could end up being the case...

Well, what do you think, am I reading too much into this, or will Nintendo reveal new Galaxy, Punch-Out, and Metroid Prime games at this years E3?

reading too much into it

Probably reading too much into it.

Probably reading too much into it, but I do see where you're coming from.

I would love if this were the case, and they certainly do need to have some new things for E3. I really want the new Mario to be announced this year and not next, though 3DS could be next up for a new Mario game.

Nope, Europe has DKC instead of Punch-out.

Punch-Out? Wasn't it Donkey Kong?

But yea, you are reading too much into it but it would be great if the wiiU got another Galaxy and Metroid

dont think so, they chose a mario galaxy because it was the most popular game on it and metroid prime trilogy because its very very rare to get a copy in physical form. Punch out maybe, who knows

Galaxy 2 was a good choice. Not enough people made the jump from Galaxy 1 to 2. Despite that -- this was probably the best title for Nintendo to release first as it gives them a good idea of the max amount of sales they could really expect from more Wii titles in the eShop.

I do think VC releases do fulfill some purpose in helping Nintendo gauge which of their other IPs are strong or not. Obviously Punch-out should have some resurgent popularity because of Little Mac in Smash Bros.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I think they were strategic, yes. Mario Galaxy 2 for its popularity and high profile, Punch Out was a solid performing title here and an IP that could use exposure, and Metroid Prime Trilogy is a rare game people want but can't find for a reasonable price. As for announcements, I think Galaxy 3 and Prime 4 are definite possibilities at E3, but I don't think there's a connection necessarily.

Actually I think it was the exact opposite. They probably chose some titles that they felt WiiU lacks. There is no Metroid, Punch-Out or proper 3D Mario on WiiU (3D World is still kind of 2D the way it plays).
