In my opinion, no. The game contradicts why he made the LOTR universe in the first place. But how about you?

Nobody cares? Did anyone actually play that game for the plot?

Ummmm Yes?

I didn't play the game so i don't know what the story is about
My opinion: Who the hell cares? It's a game that is an orc-killing simulator. It doesn't need to make a dead guy happy to justify its existence.
Prediction for console Lifetime sales:
Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million
[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]
3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m
I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.
[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]
No, while I really enjoyed the game, the story was kind of weak, it mostly played out as your typical revenge story. It was very rushed, a bit too much fanservice and I felt character development wasn't too great outside of Torvin. That being said it didn't ruin the experience by any means, it's just not the game's strongest point.

I dunno, if Tolkien hated it, the sales would be very different.

Tolkein, being about 130 years old by now couldn't possibly even have an opinion on SoM because he'd have no clue what the game is, or what it's about, or what's the story.
If Tolkein was alive there would never have been a single movie or game ever adapted from his material most likely. So sales would be zero.
Of course throw enough money at anyone and they will sell their rights. And throw enough money at them and they will sign a contract which bars them from ever voicing a negative opinion on any derivative material because if they do they wil be sued into poverty.
So no, sales would be exactly what they are today regardless of an hypotheticaly alive Tolkein's opinion.
Who actually thinks the SoM story is any good? Certianly not me and I bought and greatly enjoyed the game. It was a thin, loose thread to stitch fun orc killing sprees together. Naught wrong with that.

Ken Kesey and Anthony Burgess absolutely deplored the film adaptations of their works, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and A Clockwork Orange, weren't shy about making it known, and no one gave a shit (though in Burgess' case he just kind of hated A Clockwork Orange in general). But of course Tolkien's fanbase are ridiculous, fanatical nerds who take his work as gospel, so maybe his disaproval would have had some effect in the long term.
