so the last two big tetris releases on dedicated consoles (portable or home) have ranged between pretty damn awful (ubisoft's "tetris ultimate," a misnomer if ever there was one) and merely mediocre (nintendo's own mii-infested "tetris axis"). everyone seems to agree on a few tetris titles that stand out as classics--tetris (gb) / tetris dx (gbc), tetris ds etc.--and, believing as i do that tetris is to video games as chess is to board games, i wanted to ask which is the best iteration of tetris so far. perhaps heretically, i've included nintendo's own panel-de-pon snes game with the tetris name plastered on it as well as the n64's underrated tetrisphere.

Really any iteration that doesn't have those dreadful prediction outlines where the block will fall.

Amen to that. Ugh.

A lot of people say that Tetris DS is the most satisfying of all iterations.

Anyway, this might be a good place to ask when Tetris Ultimate is coming out for home console, and if there'll be a retail release?

I always enjoyed Tetris 2 on the SNES quite a bit

however Tetris Attack for me is the most fun in terms of complicated speed competition. you play that against someone else who knows it well and it gets hot in that room

I like the GameBoy version the best, maybe because it was one of my first games (together with Super Mario Land).

Hm Tetris for GB was my jam when I was a kid, but I went with Tetris DS because it's the only version of Tetris that had other game modes I actually enjoyed as much as classic mode.

EA Tetris > Nintendo Tetris. Tetris DS is the best Nintendo Tetris game though.

i considered adding the psn one instead of the wiiware title but i thought that was a little barebones... what would you nominate?

I've spent most time on Tetrisphere; nostalgia may fog the truth but it felt very big, lots of modes, very fast in higher levels and it wasn't very predictable, you always had to have the whole globe right in your head to know the shortest ways to success. It was the most interesting thing I've seen with Tetris. Never really cared about Tetris before except for a casual run every once in a while.
Tetris DS was nice but didn't eat much of my time.
