IF this is truly a $50 price cut worldwide, and not just in Europe, then yes I think it'll have a big effect.

360 is probably already killing PS3 in America (since shortages ended, I noticed at my Best Buy 360 outselling PS3 like crazy). There really is a lot of demand for 360. Now add a cut on top of that?

It wont be the end of course, but pretty soon it might be "the end" of PS3 ever taking #2 behind Wii in America, although that point has probably already passed.

Actually Japan chose the Wii, so did Europe.  I think what people mean is that in America, a $50 price cut could do serious damage to the PS3.  It is unlikely the PS3 will ever make it out of third spot in America, but if Microsoft plays their cards right they could make Sony in America almost irrelevant.

No a price cut wouldn't kill anything. 360 is already re-taking their lead on the PS3 in NA and that lead would increase significantly should they reduce the price in NA. In Europe it could enable MS to become much closer to the PS3 in sales although, it wouldn't surpass them long term. Japan is well Japan, not much is going to change how the 360 is doing here.

why will this gen last that long? tech doesn't determine gen length if anything, wii's signiicant advantage will make the other 2 eager to release a console that can attempt to compete for the vast majority of the potential market

I think in April sometime before GTA4 is released, Sony will cut 50 Euro off the price. They will want to use their red ink in the next quarter / fiscal year. When that happens, we'll be seeing weekly PS3 sales near, dare I say it, the Wii in that region.

If the PS3 was ending, I think that would have happened in 2007. That was really MS's chance to kill the PS3 in the current situation. Of course, MS can get a game out that hypes a non-FPS fanbase just as much as Halo, but the next year doesn't look like there is anything. Sony has alot more big hitters from distinct genres.

Unless it's a big price drop, I can't see it doing any good in Europe to be honest. I've said this before, the Premium and Elite need to drop to close to £200 or even under for it to make a big impact.

On the other hand, I can't see Sony doing anything at the moment. But I reckon they will reduce the price ni Europe later in the year to £250.
