Forums - Microsoft - a nintendo fanboy's impression of RYSE: son of rome

what score would you give to RYSE?

4/10 36 39.13%

5/10 9 9.78%

6/10 16 17.39%

7/10 17 18.48%

8/10 7 7.61%

9/10 7 7.61%

Total:92

so i basically work at this used video game store, and we sold a copy of ryse. later, the person says it is "defective" and wants his money back. i didnt believe him, so i only offered store credit (that is standard procedure here, anyway. we would only give cash back in certain circumstances).

anyways, i took the game home, popped it in, and was first of all shocked that i was able to just play it right then and there. so that started this experience off on a very bright note.

at this point, im still expecting the game to be completely stupid, and i was explaining to my wife about how this game came out to showcase the xbone's power and it appeals to people who like graphics and violence. so of course, my expectations were super low, and i wanted hers to be too.

we watched the opening scene, and it was decently entertaining, but im all about gameplay (of course, since im a nintendo fan) so i really just wanted to sink my teeth into this game. much to my surprise again, it didnt drown me in boring dialogue before i actually got to do this. so now i get to see what this game is all about.

an enemy approaches, and i button mash the x button since that is the way gems like assassins creed go about it, but.. IT DIDNT WORK. i got killed super quick. so at this point, i restart the mission and actually read the instructions, and there was some pretty decent gameplay mechanics in this game. so i am learning how to do combat, catch on decently quickly, and im on my way to playing this game. the combat in this game had me impressed. its more involved than you might think.

i beat chapter 2, so i can already see that this is not a lengthy game. but we all knew that already, so that is no surprise. i enjoy the combat in this game, and i enjoy how you can choose what kind of perks you can receive when you perform finishing moves. also, as you continue playing, you get more options on things you can do. so i think that was a very good way to avoid monotonous gameplay.

so basically, i went into this game thinking i was going to be playing a 4.5/10, but left feeling that this is a solid 7. maybe a 7.5. the combat is fun and engaging, and the cutscenes dont overstay their welcome. the game is short, but its fun to play, and that is the most important part. again, i have only completed chapter 2, so maybe my opinion will change once i get to chapter 6 or 7. if it does, i may make a new thread, but right now, i have to say im thoroughly impressed. i thought this game was supposed to suck.

I have to start on it. Just played about 10m but i wasn't bored at all. Maybe later i will be bored but seeing how everything early on about the Xbox One was completely blown out of proportion i doubt it.

The visual eye candy, but if you play on at least hard difficulty it's a pretty decent game. A 7 is definitely fair.

Is the combat similar to Bayonetta with slow motion cinematic fight sequences?

Glad you're enjoying it. I don't know why it received such a negative reception it is pretty fun

yeah, i really dont know either. i can see the length being a problem, but other short games have gotten much more praise than this has. maybe it doesnt satisfy the market that it may have been intended for. maybe they were expecting something a little more lifeless, less complicated, and with more cutscenes. i can see how this game can be disappointing for somebody who wanted all those things.

i forgot to mention, i am playing it on the hardest setting. i always do that. makes games more immersive.

yeah. you press a button when the enemy is low on health to start the cinematic sequence, and you have to do the command prompts. if you complete this, then you get extra health, extra xp, attack boost, and things like that. whatever you choose.

you really do have to be weary of other enemies surrounding you. so you are constantly changing targets. if you play on hard, your health is vital, so it really makes you not want to get hit.
