Fighting with Monsters - A look at Beyond Good and Evil

The article I am linking to is a three-page love letter to Beyond Good and Evil. I know that I have expressed my passion for this game multiple times, and that passion will never die. Out of all the games I have ever played, the sales of BG&E really hurt me the most. The story behind the game’s creation is what makes the lackluster consumer reception so hard to swallow.

This game was Michel Ancel’s dream game. While he loves Rayman, that limbless hero was raking in cash that would help fund Beyond Good and Evil. Mr. Ancel put all he had into BG&E…spirit, time, sweat, and tears. Unfortunately, all he was left with in the end were heaps of praise from the media, and a very cold shoulder from the public. I am glad to see articles like this that really explain the game to people, in the hopes of sparking some interest. You should really click over and read…I’ll sit here with my fingers crossed in the hopes of a sequel.

Here is the 3 page letter

a little short but definitely a great game.

one gripe, i don't like how you can't return to your home planet after you leave for the end battle. i was one orb (or whatever) short of collecting them all.

I love BG&E. One of the very few games that comes close to Zelda. The Dutch(!) voice acting was very good, amazing gameplay (collecting photographs, "dungeon explotration", world map exploration, improve hovercraft) and the story was great.
It's really a shame that this game didn't sell better.

If you have a Wii: buy the GameCube version, you won't regret it. (Don't know whether the other consoles allow this game considering BC).

I really hope there will be a sequel.

The ending of the game really hints to a sequel btw.

I had this game, played it some, then gave it up.
Realized my mistake, went and got it back.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Great article, not too much about the game but more about journalism though.

And great game too, of course

word i loved this games im trying to get my brother to send back the copy he took without me noticing when he joined the navy

It's a pity this game sold as poorly as it did. It was supposed to be a trilogy and I was really pumped for the next game.

I hope they do a re-release/remake some time down the road, maybe that would sell better and make them finish the series.

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

Ah, that was one sweet game! Too bad we got crappy Dutch voiceovers here in Holland.

Great game - one of my favourites. If only all games managed to be this good with great story and nice mix of gameplay from fighting, vehicles, races, exploration... and so on.

Loved how complete the vision was - really felt like a real place with nicely thought out details.

Would love to see the story continue as it was clearly meant to, and have all the unanswered questions resolved.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
