Forums - Nintendo - Is Nintendo crazy? Why is the X1 almost the same price as the Wii U this holiday?

The Wii-U is terrible value hardware wise if you look at price/performance. You have tablets that beat the system in performance for the same price i mean come on.

WiiU--> home console

Tablet--> tablet

But the WIi-U uses a tablet controller so the comparison makes sense. And the tablet controller is bigger than an Nvidia Shield tablet while it doesn't contain the actuall hardware. In other words: bad design.

Wii-U: non-mobile tablet

Tablet: mobile tablet with more expensive harware for the same price

I think you are mixing things a little bit, try & see this with rational eyes.

The gamepad is not a tablet controller, its a joypad with a touch-screen, the DS when it was released wasn't considered a tablet, was it?

It doesn't have the main console hardware inside it, because it's just a controller! A neat controller with lots of functionalities (mic, speakers, camera, motion sensing, headphone jack, NFC, touch-screen), but still a controller, that is why it is "big" compared to a tablet. It must be ergonomic to fit in your hands, it has physical buttons, 2 analog sticks & a D-pad. It must be robust too, not like a tablet that will break if you let it fall to the ground, the gamepad is designed to be handled by children.

Mine has fallen to the ground a few times, one time it was smashed to the floor when my Beagle tengled in the charging wires while she was playing chasing a tennis ball, result: except a few scratches, it still works fine...

The WiiU is NOT a non-mobile tablet, it's a home console, that has a controller with touch-screen functions mimicked by tablets. When you turn on your console & start playing Mariokart 8 with the Classic Controller Pro, It plays like every console has played before it! You play on TV with a classic controller in your hands!!!

Furthermore, the WiiU can do more things or different things than a Tablet: it has a disc drive, 4 USB ports, you can connect it to the web via Cable, you can plug different kinds of controllers to it, so quite a different beast than a tablet.

I think you can honestly agree with this?

Wii U should have sold at 199 with 2 games at least for one day and I mean good high value games like super mario 3d land + smash or mario kart 8.

They make the most money from their own developed games most of the time (N64, Gamecube, WiiU). Perhaps Wii as well since they sold so much Mario Kart, Wii Fit, etc. games.

Current problem on WiiU is that the userbase is so low that even their best selling games only give them a decent profit, instead of a great one.
If you know that the library of a typical WiiU owner is consisting of over 50% of Nintendo developed (or at least published) titles, then they should pursue a higher userbase.

Obviously they shouldn't cut the price in half or whatever, but a slight price cut along with some added value by including a game or heck even a small third party hard drive should do the trick. The holiday season is only once a year, but they don't really offer enough to make people go out and buy their console.

I'm all for a price drop, I like to spend money as much as the next guy & I agree that a price drop helps the sales. I'm sure Nintendo is thinking about it, they have been in this business for quite a long so let's trust them a bit don't you think?

You speak as if companies that have been in the business for a long time can't make mistakes. Sony had been in the business for a long time when they butchered the PS3 launch. MS had been in the business for a long time when they butchered the X1 launch. And Nintendo had been in the business for a long time when they decided that it was a smart idea to release a console just a little bit more powerful than last gen for $350, just because it had a controller with a screen on it.

And don't get me wrong, I actually like the Wii U's design, and I'm planning to buy one someday. But in my eyes (and obviously in the eyes of the millions of people that are NOT buying it), it is not worth $300.
