The gap will be much bigger than 10m though :O

Could Sony put MS in a difficult situation? MS have 'temporarily' dropped the price of the XB1 but what if Sony continue with these bundles into next year or even drop the price themselves? This would effectively make it almost impossible for MS to sustain any meaningful momentum if they then increase the price back to what it should be.
The PS5 Exists.

100M to 90M? Lol...
In almost exactly one year we are looking at 13M to 7M. If we extrapolate thats going to end up being 100M to 55M or so. But you are right though, if MS can at least sell over 40M consoles to whatever the PS4 sells they will be very happy.

Yeah, we have no idea what the future is going to bring. This is a several year marathon. Ultimately, in a few more years both consoles will probably be priced at $299.99 and have an entirely new library of exclusive offerings.
And let's not forget history. PS3 had a disasterous first year selling only 6 million consoles and look where it ended up. And yes, MS has goals and if PS4 is somehow exceeding their sales expectations, that doesn't all of the sudden make Xbox "meeting" sales expectations a failure.

360 also sold 5-6m in its first year, so yeah. With PS4 vs. XB1 we're already looking at a huge gap in one year which will only grow from here. To manage only a 10m gap in the end XB1 would have to match PS4 on a much more regular basis than 2-3 times per year.

Somehow I doubt XBox is meeting sales expectations.
Because had it been doing so, I doubt that Microsoft would have:
- Debundled an integral part of the console
- Given away free blockbuster games
- Cut the price less than a year into the lifecycle
- Been forced to reduce production due to excess of stock

Its not that complicated. One of three things can happen.

It is beyond me too. Go back a couple months , or even to mid-summer and all the polls thought the Wii U would be ahead. The huge majority were voting Wii U ahead. Yet, hardly anyone ever posted why they thought this, or if they truly did think that. The whole situation now based on those polls really gives me a good chuckel.

Unless part of their goal was to sell more than Sony. In which case you could still sell as expected.

The gap is already over 6 million, you think the gap will only grow another 4 million over 7 years? Of this I am certain, there is no way both Xb one and PS4 are coming close to PS3 and 360 numbers this generation.
There was zero growth between gen 6 and gen 7 across the PS and Xb platforms (PS2box = 181M, PS360=167M). All that happened was a reshuffling of market share towards 360, and the missing 14 million are those who went with Wii instead. I also think the casuals of the last 2 generations have gone to the real casual platforms of phone and tablet, and facebook games. So PS4 and Xb one I reckon are fighting over a market of about 150-160M. My guess is best result for Xb one is 2:1 split of market share in favour of PS4 with 100M:50M.
