Wow, people are really using this PR manipulation of figures to say we have XBO undertracked? And what are you guys thinking? Like we're seriously undertracking it by 1M-2M units?

No, what this is is MS announcing shipped numbers after they have just got most of the stock for Xmas and Black Friday on its way. Of course, if sales don't keep up, instead of slowly falling (at least going by Amazon), then they are going to have a very small shipment number in Q1 2015.

No, we are using the shipped numbers at the end of September (+ the recent downwards adjustment) to say the Xbox One is undertracked. This just provides more reason to believe that to be true.

This provides nothing but the confirmation that MS has just gotten out much of its holiday shipments.  And "approaching" is quite a bit different than "almost" or "near."  It's pretty obvious they got a bit to go before they hit 10M.  Probably ~8M-9M with the shipments they just sent out.  Also, how many XBOs were shipped as of their last quarterly report?  Cause I'm not sure, since I am sure MS stopped giving individual shipped numbers.  If the estimate is just over 6M, than we definitely don't have it undertracked, since at the end of Sept we have it at ~5.7M sold.

It is a new trend of spin?

"Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles."

So they didn't reach 10 million and expected to ship 10 million shortly? Well me too... my estimates for end of December are in ~10.5 million shipped.

And I guess last year spin was the best... *fastest selling console of November.

Shortly, 10 million.

Could be anything from a day to 3/4 months.

Keyword is "shortly". Meaning they have yet to actually ship 10 million.

No, the important thing here is that "shortly" is an ambiguous term in the same manner as "launch window". What "shortly" should be read as is "by the end of December".

Based on  their shipping history , I  read "shortly " to mean exactly how you defined it.

Had plenty of characters to type "shipped"

Sorry, didn't exactly have time to check the limit myself, I just remember frequently running out of space myself when I try to use twitter. Note: I don't use twitter very often.

Regardless, some people are acting like him not typing "shipped" is the same as him typing "sold", and that is not the case at all. The article he linked clearly specifies the number is shipped, not sold. There are some people here on VGC who will downplay any good news that comes from console manufacturers other than their own favorite, it's sad really.

but he did type "sales" and used a comma to move onto the 10 million number.   So he had 10million and sales in the same sentence.  that is why it is delibrately misleading

@bolded seems like a good idea

@underlined Yep, although... was there even any doubt?

Not really but I see this as a PR softener for another 'bad' month not just a simple win for Sony. I expected it to be closer than normal but this PR stunt tells me it's not close at all.

If the article itself was misleading they might have a case, but one tweet from one employee does not represent the company as a whole.

It seems to me the problem wasn't with the shipped wording but the  vagueness of the word shortly .

Whereas you defended him purely based on speculation about twitter character number limitations.

What the f%&k does this mean? "Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles."

They're not at 10 million shipped yet, but they will be soon-ish? How about announce when you actually make it to 10 million then we will have a proper benchmark. This soon business is just more PR non-information. SOon might be weeks or months depending on context.
