Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Discussion Thread! *Greatest Games Event 2014* (The Top 500 Games Will Now Be Chosen)

Well... It's a day later and I see I can add two points to my score for correctly guessing two of 2Quick's games. Nice .

Anyway, no one guessed mine huh? As expected, it's quite an obscure game. I did mention this game in another thread not so long ago however...

Game #22

This simple game from a French IP, at least famous in Europe, has it's gameplay based on the same board-game as another much bigger, grander franchise.

I'm so behind

42. Front Mission 4 (PS2)

I'll be honest, I never actually beat this game and it's bugged me for a long long time. Front Mission has always been a very challenging game, and you need to put a lot of thought into not only the strategy per map, but the upgrade you buy each unit and how you designate each unit. When I played this game originally, I just wasn't good enough, and levels near the end were tough. As soon as I finish school though, I'll finish that last 10%. Great game.

Morning folks.

22 - This game was just announced an HD re release on PS4. Many consider it the best game ever made.

I remember being underwhelmed when this was first shown, but it ended up being an incredible game.  It looks gorgeous, plays perfectly and differently with each character and is filled with lots of little ideas that you may only see a few times.  Captain Toad levels and the Star Houses, where you had to complete up to 10 mini challenges in a row with a 10 second time limit for each, were a nice change of pace from the regular levels.  There is plenty of content and the game has great replay value simply by being so good in little chunks, just like all the best Mario games.

Loved the art style and loved the cartoon like story and voice acting, which the cast, surprisingly, pretty much nailed.  The combat was varied and gets deeper and deeper as you progress, so much so that you can't master everything in one playthrough, or even get close.  The enemies were designed well, especially the boss battles, which were incredible in scale and matched with some awesome music. Some minor issues with the camera and Gamepad sections doesn't stop this game from being one of the best action games I have ever played.

41. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diidy Kong's Quest

I have so much trouble ranking nostalgic games like this compared to modern entries. Do I love this game for the nostalgia, or is it just damn awesome? I think it's a bit of both because while I didn't rank Donkey Kong Country for Wii/3DS/WiiU, I do legitimately believe that the SNES entries were better.

Now I'm generally not a fan of platformers, but Donkey Kong is just so damn addictive, and the pre-rendered graphics hold up well. Maybe it's just the fact that this game is such a well integrated co-op game, or it could be the epic boss fights, either way DKC2 is one of my favorite platformers ever.

Nope.  It was announced more recently than that.

   22

   Astérix

   Not released outside of Europe

   System: Sony PlayStation
   Genre: Turn-Based Strategy
   Year: 1999
   Rank last year: 24 (^ 2)

The rest of the world has been missing out on this game. To put it simple, Astérix is a strategy game in the vain of the well-known Total War series, based on the board game 'Risk'. The objective is, to conquer the rest of the map, which in this game is understandably, Gaul (France).

The player is that small Gallic village that's so resitant to the Roman overlords in Gaul. Each turn you'll get new men (or rather, new pots of 'Magic Potion') to dispurse among your regions, as do the Romans. You can take a sample of those men from any region to attack an adjacent Roman region. The outcome is determined by a roll of the dice taking into account the strength of the attackers as well as that of the defenders. Some regions include a mini-game. To conquer them, the must complete a small platforming level or some sort of mini-game. The light-heartedness of this game shines through, and it's simple mechanics just work. It's also the only console game a good PC-only gaming friend of mine, ever wants to play!
