28. New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U
Wii U (2012)
Nintendo EAD 4

Bah bah! It had been 16 years since Nitnendo launched a console with a Mario game, and Nintendo would be launching Wii U with the fourth title in the New Super Mario Bros. series. Luckily for us all, U would be the cream of the crop, bringing with it superb level design to match the already tight and polished platforming controls. Not just to be relegated to the "New" series, U brings with it loads of charm and inventive ideas that puts it among the best of any 2D Mario game. Not only that, but Nintendo brought along New Super Luigi U, an expansion pack set to challenge any savvy platformer vet with tough and frantic level design (hooray for Nabbit!). All in all, these two brilliant games showed that 2D Mario is still capable of wowing anyone looking for a great video game experience.

Hint for #27:

This game brought the series from Japan to the United States, despite the fact that there were mythological Japanese creatures roaming around the land.

Great game!

Definitely! It's my favourite 3D Mario platformer, I feel like they pretty much got everything right with that one, but more thoughts about that tomorrow. Today's post is going to be about Dawn of Sorrow.

"20 FBI agents versus me? Guess I gotta go with a bang."

Another hint for the game #27: "Lock me up and throw away the key."

Just beat this last night!

I'll admit I was a little wary of this game after so many "New" Mario games in such a short amount of time, but I was wrong to doubt EAD. The levels are interesting, challenging, and surprising; the controls, as you say, are drum-tight; and all the secrets and post-game content keep you coming back for more. It's just a gem of a game, and, in my mind, one of the best launch titles ever made.

It's apparent on how well made the game is when you go and watch the creators play it. The runs they have are *incredible*. Just shows that every platform, enemy, and any other stage hazard was put there with the utmost care and respect towards the overal stage design. So good.
