Better late than never.
Now go and watch the rest of the thousands of hours of Anime you missed over the past 17 years.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

That's what I think too. And this sounds really cliche, but I wish Ashitaka and San kissed... affectionately. Not by mouth to mouth food. Although Ashitaka did possibly cry from happiness because he got mouth to mouth with San and San did continue it afterwards... I love how the movie ended with them as friends or possibly more, though. I hate cliche hook ups at the end. But I swear. Studio Ghibli films are the only ones that make me want cliche romances to happen. |
The way I interpreted that scene, his tears were because he realized that they could not be together; to him kissing was a romantic thing, but to her it was an animal method of feeding the young and the weak. That's when he realizes their worlds are just too different for them to ever have the relationship he desires.

I've already pre-ordered my 4th copy of the movie :/
Already have the DVD + factory sealed DVD + Hong kong blu-ray version and now the Disney Blu-ray on order with the english dub for the kids. I prefer the english subs though. The english dub makes some changes to the script that lessen the impact somewhat. For example when Ashitaka has to leave the village it's clear enough that it will be permanent, the english dub didn't really have to add 'You are dead to us from now on', 'To see with eyes unclouded' sounds more poetic then adding 'by hate' at the end. Other changes don't make much sense at all, for example when Okkoto the boar god is near death the english dub says, "Don't touch him, he is no longer a god" while the sub says "Don't go near him, the curse will fall on you". Why change that? The voices themselves are well done luckily.

I already imported the Hong Kong International version when it came out. The upgrade from dvd to blu-ray is definitely worth it. The movie looks and sounds fantastic on blu-ray. |
Oh I would love to see this again in HD! I actually rented this as a DVD from my school library. The caption text was ugly and the DVD was laggy so the mouth moved before the characters talked. And I was watching it in Japanese!

Oh that makes so much sense. Poor Ashitaka...

I thought about it differently again. Ashitaka feels he has been rejected by the Forest god, who didn't cure him. He realizes he is now going to die regardless, yet Mononoke still cares enough to nurture him back to health.

The true heresy is the person who voted less than 5 in the poll. I'm going to assume someone miss clicked the see results options in order to perserve my faith in humanity.
Just kidding, we are entitled to our opinions.
And is anyone else excited that Zelda U seems to be heavily inspired by this film so far? I also noticed the spirits in the Deer God's forests are quite similar to Makar's race in Windwaker! Their tiny, wear masks, live around a forest, and make rattling noises!
