Huh. Thought i heard something a while back that microsoft was killing it there..

At launch... the first two weeks MS sold more in Australia because PS4 was close to non-avaialble in how bad the supply was.

For 2013 PS4 took the lead again.

Announced today at PlayFest, this achievement comes in advance of PlayStation celebrating its 20th anniversary in the Australian market in early 2015, and proves the PlayStation® brand continues to be the favourite place to play for Australian gamers. In addition to being the fastest selling home console in Australian history, PS4™ retains the number one next-gen console leadership position**, according to data from NPD Group Australia.

Further to the reception it has received from Australian gamers since its release, PS4 has been a significant driver in category growth since its release. According to Luis Gil, The NPD Group Australia, "the Console Hardware category in Australia has more than doubled in value since release of 8th Generation Hardware in 2013. PS4 accounted for a substantial 44% of the total category value since its launch***".

"As PlayStation powers into its twentieth year in Australia, we couldn't be happier with our position with PS4 at the top spot of the interactive entertainment industry," said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand. "I've watched this business grow over the 20 years and have had the pleasure of being part of the monumental change in innovation and category growth; of which PlayStation has historically been a key driver of. PS4 is now the fastest selling home console in Australian history and this reflects the passion of our players, our partners and the quality of the PlayStation offer."

Of course in the world too but we will focus in Australia today...

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia announced today that PlayStation 4 is the fastest selling console of all time in Australia, according to NPD Group Australia sales figures ending October 26.

Citing NPD console hardware sales data from November 25, Sony also revealed that PS4 currently holds the number one new-gen console position in the region. The console broke pre-order records for Sony consoles and devices in Australia prior to its launch in the country on November 29. Pre-orders were backlogged until the following year as retailers struggled to meet demand.

“The console hardware category in Australia has more than doubled in value since release of eighth generation hardware in 2013,” Luis Gil of The NPD Group Australia said in a prepared statement. “PlayStation 4 accounted for a substantial 44 percent of the total category value since its launch.”

The PS4 launched in Australia one week after its competitor, the Xbox One. The Australian Xbox One launch was the most successful console debut in the country’s history and saw 65,917 consoles sold in the first three days of launch, doubling the previous record of 32,900 held by the Nintendo Wii.

Approximately 700,000 PS4s were sold across Europe and Australasia in the two days following launch and the console was the fastest-selling in UK history. Sony announced in its last earnings report that it shipped 3.3 million PS4 consoles worldwide during the second quarter this year, bringing the PS4 total lifetime sales to 13.5 million units since its debut in the U.S. on November 15.

The PlayStation will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in the Australian market in early 2015. In the meantime, Sony is rolling out PlayStation TV for PS4 users in Australia on November 14, along with a dedicated PLUS7 app “later this year.” The program will allow users to stream PLUS7 programs such as “Dancing with the Stars,” “Home & Away,” “The Blacklist “ and ”Beauty and the Geek.”

The information here is... well, suspicious.

They proclaim the PS4 the "fastest-selling console", yet don't provide any figure for its sales. They say "The console broke pre-order records for Sony consoles and devices in Australia prior to its launch in the country on November 29"... note the "for Sony consoles and devices" - they didn't break pre-order records for gaming consoles, but for Sony consoles. They don't mind reporting current numbers for Europe+Australasia, yet don't actually provide a number for Australian sales.

In short, what should be a media report is instead a gushing advertisement.

I can't help but notice that this is all an "according to NPD". The thing is, NPD wasn't the company that tracked videogames in Australia - that's only a recent thing. Until recently, it was GfK. Which leads me to suspect that the entire article, and Sony's announcement, are based on NPD numbers that only go back something like 3 years.

This isn't to say that PS4 isn't the fastest selling console in Australia. It probably is. But without actual numbers relevant to the claim, I can't really take it all that seriously. Especially when I've seen no sign of PS4s being sold-out in Brisbane at any time since the end of 2013 (whereas I recall Wii being sold out frequently in 2007).

I'd be curious to hear what the VGChartz numbers on this currently look like. Anyone know?

Well Wii could be sold out frequently because of really lower stocks.

And about the PR claim, maybe they are vague because they don't have all the numbers as you said or just because it isn't much better than Wii or other consoles.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

They revealed a bit more info.

"Luis Gil, of NPD Group Australia added, “the Console Hardware category in Australia has more than doubled in value since release of 8th Generation Hardware in 2013. PlayStation 4 accounted for a substantial 44% of the total category value since its launch”."

So PS4 accounts for 44% from all console sales in value (I believe revenue) since it launch... that is even better because the Xbone is expensive than PS4 in Australia... and there is PS3, Wii, Wii U, 360 plus Xbone for the others 56%.

Amazing.

Not surprising but good to know.

Thank you...

I'm curious why people are buying it so quickly...how is it different from ps3? More power? If so seems like a odd reason to buy

Brand.

I live with two PS4 owners, one recently used theirs for Shadow of Mordor (after a couple of months of non-use), and the other hasn't turned theirs on since Trials Fusion released.

We all play my Wii U regularly :D
