Forums - Gaming - Impending Game Journalism Crash

I was just thinking about how often I hear people talk about how the game industry has deteriorated and how there may soon be another industry crash (I personally think this is nonsense though and just gamers being the dramatic, pessimistic sensationalists they always are).

What I do think though is that game journalism as we know it is bound to become obsolete soon. Good riddance if you ask me.

My reasoning for this is that there are fewer and fewer reasons to actually go to any gaming site or read any article. Which is why the only way the media can get the gamers to care at all is by posting scandalous or bad news. I feel the fact that the media  is at a point where they now feed off the bad is a great indacator that its on its way out. I can't remmeber when last I visited any site like ign/gamestop though I am subbed to their youtube channels along side a good deal of other uploaders.

Actually, I think its safe to say that now I tend to watch everything as opposed to read anything, and since I am watching... I just skip over anything that I feel is not worth the time of watching someone mouth off.

I think another problem the media has is that their is no proper regulation. Sites report news based on news reported by other sites from other sites. You know a site has become totally irrelevant when they are reporting news based on a tweet. You know its really bad when a site is quoting another site that is quoting a tweet.

I also think that with things like game dvr and youtube, we are gonna see a boom of very well made end user reviews that will become more relevant than the likes of an ign review or a game stop review. Kinda like how cell phone reviews are made by everyday uploaders and the likes of T3, wired...etc that would typically have been the go to source for such things have become obsolete.

What do you guys think?

It'd be nice, but I doubt it. Youtube journalism has already picked up substantially over the past few years after people realized that's where you can make money for doing very little, especially if you get a fanbase.

Well thats true, I do however think that with Youtube its easier to sift through the BS. Especially since more and more people have subscriptions now. Like as it stands I seldom ever search for anything. I just know there are certain uploaders that give me the exact kinda stuff I am interested in. And as for news, I always tend to hear about stuff first on forums before they even get uploaded on youtube. So i just skip vids like that.

As it stands, as far as "breaking news" goes, gamers seem to have become independednt of any major news outlet. On forums we get news from either twitter or reddit and mostly from the devs themselves. The major outlets seem to only report what we already know. The only time they are worth anything is if they are doing excusive coverage of anything.

There's actually a pretty sweet add-on to browsers in the works, that takes an image of clickbait articles, and posts them to a site for viewing (if you feel the need), so that the sites in question gain nothing from the ad revenue generated from potential clicks. Thought that was a pretty nifty idea.

Youtube is definitely getting more and more important lately, but I doubt that written stuff will completely vanish. I really like reading good articles and I don't think I'm the only one.

No you are not... but I can assure you, anyone would take a well made video over a written article anyday.

Scenario one, a really nice article that covers an interview with a developer with exclusive pictures.

Scenario two, same interview but in a well edited video with lost of new and exclusive B-reel footage.

I know what I would rather do.....

You know, when I'm sitting in front of my laptop I almost always listen to music and I really enjoy reading articles simultaneously, instead of having to pause an album because I need to watch a video. And the longer the articles are, the better! But I can only speak for myself, of course, and I do enjoy videos too.

Sure. It's funny that a lot of outlets seem to consider themselves new media simply because they're online, but then they behave exactly like old media. YouTube and the like is the real new media, as any gamer with any preference can find a content creator to whom they can relate far better and whose opinions are much more relevant and valuable to them than those of some haughty blogger.

Add in the fact that a number of these old bloggers decided that it would be a brilliant idea to declare war on much of their own audience, and it's not going to end well for them.

I'm always disappointed when I click the link to what I think is an article, only to find out it's a video...
I work in a residential facility for disabled adults, so I spend a fair amount of time in waiting rooms...
It's a lot easier to read an article quietly and politely than to watch a video...
That's not to say I don't love a good video, but reading has its benefits...

Have a nice day...
