More spinoffs? Right, because Hyrule Warriors and Captain Toad are big time console movers. After this season the only big console mover Nintendo has left is Zelda. That's extremely worrying.

They're scrapping by this gen, at this point I think they're just trying to satisfy their 10-20m worth of loyal fans .

Captain toad is glorified DLC and they already said HW and WWHD were commisioned because the actual zelda game would take so long. They simply were not prepared to suppport a new HD console which is quite shocking when you think of how much resouces and breathing space the success of the Wii gave them.

I blame the 3DS.

Don't. Blame Nintendo, they could have easily invested in another half a dozen studios between 2009-2012. Better yet they could designed the Wii U with longterm third party support in mind!

Fingers cross that they've learned their lesson and make a much bigger splash with their next system.

To be fair, 3 of 2015's scheduled releases are new IPs (Splatoon, Project Guard and Project Robot - the latter two may not be 'big' projects, but Splatoon seems to be a major development: time will tell if it gets the marketing to reflect that)), while Starfox hasn't had a new iteration for quite a few years. Nintendo has also introduced a number of new IPs this gen - off the top of my head I can think of Pullblox and Harmoknight - and kept alive a critically acclaimed IP otherwise vulnerable to disappearing (Bayonetta).  Are they really any worse than other companies?

That, too. They're going to have a far easier time next time around, though, assuming the Wii U successor is just an incremental upgrade, and the 3DS successor displays 3D in HD!

I'd blame the 3DS because it also had a slow start, and arguably sapped too many of their resources trying to satisfy the 3DS audience. And, well, the 3DS is even less friendly to third-parties than the Wii U.

I'm hoping that they partner with the bigger JP publishers next time around.

Nintendo makes more games per year than either Sony or MS too, they just have to support two platforms and get no third party support. One company can only do so much.

Hyrule Warriors was a good call. So is Captain Toad for that matter.

We'll probably see a Mario Galaxy HD Collection at some point next year.

Cynicism is okay but when they announced a new ip. You words weren't all too kind either. They just can't win.

Edit: Damn you, Rol. Ninja'd.

i dont think you understand my point. i didnt criticize splatoon for being a new IP nor did i criticize nintendo for making it. in fact, you bringing this up just reinforces my point. look at the bolded part, and then tell me, is spaltoon on the same scale and ambition as the new zelda they are making? are they putting the same effort in it as they are doing with Smash Bros? no, they arent. and thats my point, nintendos new ips arent being part of their bigger projects, they are playing it safe, which in result is earning them a moddest return. my point in that thread was that spaltoon, while it looks good, isnt as a big or ambitions project as other big TPS games out there like SO or the division for example, yet it was recieving as much attention, is that because its a TPS made by nintendo (which is something out of the usual).

Explain then, why is Nintendo is aiming for splatoon to be the mario kart of the genre?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW14P1xOz58 (at the 4: 11 mark)

Why was Splatoon a large part of their E3 showcase?

Did you ever consider that Splatoon was getting so much attention (over Division and SO) is because it is part of Nintendo's bigger projects (hence the positive media coverage)? The exact point your are whining about now?

More spin offs promised? Keep milking nintendo but your flat out refusal to let your biggest projects be new ips is one of the main reasons wiiu is tanking so hard. Keep milking zelda and mario, lets see how far that takes you.

When we look back at the new IPs they've made, they show that you're absolutely right. Dillon's Western, Pushmo, Wii Series, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Brain Age, and so ons are eshop games/casual games with little depth and/or barebones visuals. I think Pikmin is pretty much the only one with a AAA budget, or atleast just looks as good as their best efforts at the time.
