Devil May Cry, but only DMC: Devil May Cry, not the older ones.

God of War 1, 2 or 3, there is just no better action game than God of War.

For me the bigger problem was that he was just an unlikeable, unrelateable, irredeemable one-note douchebag who spent the whole time yelling every goddamn sentence in a "this is my angry voice" monotony.

If his wife is dead, why do you care if he goes around with other women then? It's not like not having sex is going to bring her back.

This is a very difficult comparison.

I like DMC for the cool characters and style. I like GoW because of the setting.

I would say DMC is a better series as it has room to expand in any direction they want, but GoW doesnt and burned through the setting really fast and is now on hold.

In terms of combat DMC is definitly tighter than GoW long sweeps.

I actually came across some hardcore GoW fans on these forums, but i still think that its combat is the weskest of the top action games. Still enjoyable though, especially Ascencion. Its very difficult to beat Bayonetta and DMC though.

Not the same genre but..

Devil May Cry is superior in everything in my opinion and far better at combat objectively.

Devil May Cry, outside of the second entry, has shown amazing combat growth in each subsequent installment. Even DmC: Devil May Cry made advancements in the combat system with the pulls and fast swaps. Ignoring the story/character controversy, it failed in combat because it made it too easy to remain aerial and lacked a lockon, which is a must have feature for a game like DMC.

It's not really a fair comparison either. DMC created a whole new genre, God of War gave us a bunch of funny Square Square Triangle pics.

In terms of best to worst:
DMC3 > DMC4 > DMC > DmC > DMC2.


That said, Bayonetta 2 is the absolute best character action game in existence, bar none. Bayonetta 1 was already fighting with DMC 3 for the top spot, but Bayonetta 2 just leap frogged both of them and sped off far out of reach.

I really hate the enemy respawn and closed doors in DMC, and I always feel a little lost with the shitty camera. Still DMC is a lot more fun, cool, and i think it's deeper in term of gameplay... GOW is perfectly polished in term of style, cutscene, graphics, but it lack of big wtf moments. That's a draw for me, and mostly it depends if you prefer the japanese anime's style, or the Hollywood blockbuster style.

Just can't win with some people, just too easy for some to exaggerate and make hyperbolic nonsensical comments like 'waah kratos only shouts' or 'waah square square triangle' or 'waah the former general of the spartan army and one time God of War isn't someone I'd go for a drink with' or 'waah why is he so angry, he was only lied to, manipulated, betrayed, used, tormented, killed and had the only people he ever loved taken away, he should get over it'...

Instead of challenging that nonsense head on, let's try to make this more objective. Firstly, God of War is a significantly more acclaimed series.

And then looking at sales, God of War 2 + 3 alone at ~10.8 million actually sold more than all 5 original games in the Devil May Cry series which total only 10.66m . An exclusive series that started late in the life of the PS2 has already sold over twice as many units in 9 1/2 years than DMC has in 13 years on multiple platforms.

The acclaim and sales obviously show that God of War is a far more beloved and popular series due to its overwhelming quality. More proof would be looking at the most 'liked' game pages on Facebook related to both series which shows just how much more beloved GoW is:

In every measurable way, God of War is far superior. That doesn't mean people aren't allowed to prefer DMC, but when people talk nonsense about GoW saying things like 'It's not even in the same genre' just because they focus on accessibilty and fun versus overcomplicated combat and difficulty. Or 'DMC is a better series as it has room to expand in any direction they want, but GoW doesnt' as if they've all got a guns to their heads at SMS and aren't allowed to change anything ever. It is just annoying to see such bitterness towards the one franchise that kept the genre relevant, especially since the genre is currently struggling more than ever.

And apparently after releasing a game just last year, GoW is 'now on hold' for some reason, uh, what? Why would it be? GoW: Ascension was just a throwaway multiplayer experiment, yet it still averaged a good 81% and has sold 2.5m+ (undertracked) to date and will settle between 3-3.5m lifetime...  They haven't announced GoW4 =/= it's on hold, what sort of backward logic is that?! They are working on the game as we speak, waiting to reveal it when the time is right. If anything, after the reboot selling so poorly the Devil May Cry series will be on hold for a long time, maybe even dead forever.
