Forums - Nintendo - The Wii U gamepad's remote play range?

No, but you can bring your WiiU console to work and plug it in and play on the gamepad.

Around the Network

The gamepad is local remote-play off a 5GHz transceiver that can, in theory, reach several hundred feet. The problem is, however, that 5GHz is a very populated frequency range and depending on how noisy your environment (wifi and such), the signal could get really short to like 20-50ft.

In my apartment, since its a college building thats got like fifty unique wifi routers, the gamepad will only go about thirty feet before it start having issues. But if I take it home, where there is only one router that I can switch to a less troublesome band, I can cover the whole house.

I play it all the way in the basement and the console is in my room 2 floors up and I have no problems.

Just put the Wii U console under your desk and take out the gamepad at break time!

Mine works in the next room, but only about a meter from the other door lol. It's a short range, but understandable since it is meant to be used in the living room afterall.

(But mine is in the bedroom )

I can't even play it on the toilet a mere 5 metres away...

I've never been able to get more than 1 room away from my Wii U during Off-TV play. A contributing factor to this is that most of my WiFi devices operate on the 5GHz band now.

I think the Off-TV system would work better if it relayed through the router, or gave the option for it. Direct connections are only good for low-latency at short range. If I want to play farther away, it needs to be routed through the... erm... router.

Another benefit to this is putting the Off-TV function another step closer to being able to work over the internet.

LOL! What this man said!

My living room is too big for me to take the gamepad to other rooms.

...okay, definitely a first world problem meme in the making, but it still is kinda annoying that I can't play in my room or the bathroom.

It really should be compared to the remote play with the VitaPS3 because that has either WiFi or 3G connection I don't believe the gamepad has either of those.

In my previous home I could play a few rooms away but, im new home I cannot even play it one room away so idk what interferes and whatnot.
