If it wasn't for MS some of us would've been playing a 3rd Person Shooter with no central figure and a cliche story. It would've been a "one and done", like Landguy said.
MS wanted a blockbuster so they asked Bungie to make the game FPS, hired Eric Nylund to give its story a sense of depth and market it like Xbox start up and future depended on it.
