350$ for the desktop + 200$ for the monitor + 150$ for the video card + 100$ for the ram + 100$ for the external hard drive + 100$ for external DVD burner

AMD dual core processor, forget the numbers, 4400+ or something like that.
ATI x800 pci-e card
300 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM, mouse, keyboard, power supply, case, mobo, DVD burner...
= $500
22" widescreen Acer = $170
HDTV card = $50.
Already had speakers.

Total = $730.

Dell XPS1210. 12 inch screen, 4lb

2gb ram, dedicated video card, 160gb storage. close to 6 hours of battery time.

nothing special, but it makes carrying it around school much easier.
