It'll be a feat if the WII U's successor matches the PS4 in terms of capability seeing as how Nintendo is prone towards aggressively pricing their consoles in the sub $350 bracket and is obsessed with smaller form factors along with lower power consumption.


If by fall 2016 you can't put the tech of the ps4 into a $249 box the size of the Wii U, technology is failing us. The PS4's not exactly hefty either

Then by all means it's time for you to make an early declaration because the way it's going now there won't a whole lot of cost reductions in the future of microelectronics ...

Quantum computers WON'T help for gaming performance ...

A GTX 970 is very expensive to manufacture coming in at about 400mm^2 die. The PS4's whole entire APU which also consists of it's CPU has a die area of 330mm^2. What's more is that not a whole lot of engineers are expecting cost reduction anymore so it's very unlikely that a GTX 970 will go for less than $260 in the near future ... 

Well... its not like the wiiU's successor will launch in 2015... Or even in 2016... Most likely, it will launch in 2017 or in my case 2018 so I am sure they can lower the cost within that time enough to make it pleasable. And I am sure if Nintendo tried hard enough (which they wont) they can cut a deal with nvidia and also sell the console at a slight loss in order to pack that in

Only for very specialized tasks. Like e.g. making calculations for quantum-mechanical systems, cryptography or ordering long lists.

I'm not even sure if the WII U will even last until the end of 2016 cause of the way the market's responding towards the WII U it will reach it's saturation point very quickly and with Nintendo giving less and less reasons for consumers to purchase a WII U cause of moves like prioritzing the 3DS version of Smash Bros will give the WII U not a whole lot of breathing room to shine. Hell, at this point it's gonna be a miracle if it even hits 15 million when the better idea is to just launch a new console platform instead supporting a failed one. 

As for lowering costs of producing chips that won't happen for quite sometime. I don't even expect chip manufacturing cost reduction until 2020 when EUV or DSA starts gaining traction among foundries like Intel, Samsung, or TSMC. 

As for cutting a deal with Nvidia I don't think that will happen since they usually ask for higher margins than AMD for the custom chip markets. Selling a console at slight loss doesn't mesh with Nintendo's business strategy. What works for Sony doesn't necessarily work for others and what will Nintendo do if their successor fails too ?

Nintendo's brand in the console space isn't as strong as you think it is so the risk isn't worth it compared to the gains that Sony would see from that strategy ...

In terms of "crytography" ? Absolutely, but the reality of it is that quantum computers do little to help other performance critical applications such as rendering graphics ...

Even if the Wii U would fail to sell any console by then Nintendo can't simply roll out a new console just like that. Just like Jizz I'm expecting the next Nintendo Console for holiday 2017 at the earliest. And by then NVidias GTX 970 will already have become very old, nevermind the fact that that card alone is still too  expensive for a console both in price and in TDP.

Lowering the production cost for the chips is still possible because they are still being made in 45 nm. A simple Die shrink would mean more chips can hold on a wafer and thus the price per chip would be lower
