Really? Created a game that failed to sell enough for Sega to have confidence enough to see the already in development sequal as a way to keep revenue flowing. Could not sell the game to other 3rd party publishers as a likely success. Needed Nintendo to swoop in at the last minute and offer a helping wallet, which results in a game that will sell so low even Nintendo won't be willing to fund a 3rd game.

Created a from scratch exclusive for Nintendo that seemed like it would be a great fit on a Nintendo console, which received a reasonable amout of hype, at least from forum dwellers, which flat out failed.
Seems like he's a legend in not beaing able to understand the market.
As to being a legend as a great game designer, I cannot say as I haven't played any of his games. However he does seem to get good reviews, so at least game reviewers like his work.
