Forums - Gaming - Only "gamers" care about games being Indie

"Gamers" love games period. Anyone that makes a fuss about "indies" imo is not a "Gamer". They would be better described as a casual that only plays AAA's. It's like comparing two Marvel, or DC fans. Both genuinely enjoy the characters and the story arch's however one loves them so much that they actually read the comics and graphic novels and then the other only ever watches the high budget films and has the audacity to say comics don't count and those that read them are some how lesser fans. When in truth it's the opposite that is true. Those that only care about high budget AAA titles don't really love or understand games and in my book aren't truly gamers. However that's probably just because I grew up in a time when most games were low budget and most devs were indie.

If we take X360 owners - the platform which made indies popular on consoles, labeled as Live Arcade - for example: Did anyone of them ever them call Minecraft, Castle Crashers, Trials/Fuision, Defense Grid, Toy Soldiers, Limbo, Bastion, Braid, Shadow Complex, Super Meat Boy, Splosion Man etc. "not real games" or games that don't count or uninteresting by default because they are small budget games? Don't think so.

Countless times Sony fanboys wrote off the digital library of the X360 cause they dont count in the debate of who has more/better games.

And now Sony fanboys have changed for the better, by acknowledging indies. Is there anything bad about that?

I dont ever think they really wrote off indys, they just bought them but didnt want to admit that X360 had some good games. A lot like MS fanboys downplaying the number of games on the PS4..........but if X1 had more games cause of indys Sony fanboys would downplay the amount of games. Neither side can take the truth so there is probably nothing good about the situation.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Some people seem to think the term indie is a term that describes quality.

Just because you have encountered indie games of varying quality does not mean that all indie games are off that quality such is a genetic fallacy.

The term "Indie" only describes the budget of the game.

So when I see comments like "Mainstream doesn't care about indie games" this only applies to the actual meaning of indie, which means a low budget. Quality wise, as long as a game is good and or people enjoy it then it will sell, and if it is good enough it will sell systems ala Minecraft. Whether the game is Indie or not only has bearing on how much the game is advertised, which has more to do with the publisher. If the game has a big budget, then the publisher will spend money to advertise the game in which it will reach mass markets. If the game is self-published, it will be much harder to get the game marketted, which is the major problem surronding Indie Developers especially those who self-publish, Marketting. However, it can be done, regardless of whether the game is "Indie" or not.

I expect better quality postings from you sir, and you have let me down. As another user has pointed out "indie" does not mean low budget or have anything to do with advertising. It means they are their own studio / development team independent of ownership from another party. While publishers do often help with budgets and advertising, that doesn't mean an "indie" game (or studio) can't work with a publisher on a specific title for advertising or budget.

also you wrote "off" instead of "of" and "genetic" where you meant "generic" please proof read and fact check then post again.

I will permaban myself if the game releases in 2014.

Here is the problem with indie: Do i buy a discounted AAA or niche japanese game or for the same price i get a small game?

For me the choice is clear. I am getting more value on the discounted game. I have yet to buy an indie game, but there are a few that interest me. But, most of the barrage of uninteresting indie games i dont even blink at. Its not what i bought my console for. Its a nice added bonus, but thats it.

to that same regard I don't buy every retail game as at least half of them hold no interest to me or I think are crap... Brink comes to mind...

meanwhile there are some indie games that I look forward to very much and are well worth the money for me, such as Transistor

I agree. There are some that look interesting and are worthwhile. Bastion and transistor fit on that group.

Its the rest that ends up giving it a bad rep. That and the barrage of 2D platformers and shooters. I mean cmon... there is a limit to how many of those people can stomach, and with Nintendo right there offering the best of them on the Wii U and 3DS, its a difficult sell.

Im talking about what the term is used to describing things as, ergo its connotation not its denotation. As for its actual definition, its merely a matter of semantics, and this doesn't really add to the discussion. So its fair to assume this post is made in jest.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

I don't care. It's just a game and I don't care who makes it.

Indies don't interest me for the most part. I like JRPGs and most indies dont offer that and the ones that do feel very lacking. However nowadays people take personal offense to not getting off to indies like they do. XD Im allowed to not like indies, they arent sacred and required in order to game

I don't really know where you get that from? If someone truely believes this I don't agree with them. Trials HD and Limbo were a big part of why I rebought a 360 in 2010.

Indie games on your console can never be seen as a downside and even though not everyone loves them as much as I do they're great to have between big releases. I was excited to see lots of quality indies being announced for PS4 so I made this thread.

Indie games always mattered and that's why a lot of PS owners spammed the hell out of Sony and indie devs in hope to get certain games released for their console. Especially in the beginning of 7th gen Xbox 360 was the best place to find indies and many PS owners wanted those games on PS as well.

But eventually PS3 did receive an awful lot of great indie games as well you know. Maybe that's why it wasn't as big of a topic as it is now where PS4 without question is the place to go for indie games.

In my opinion only 3 important indie games are missing on the PS3 and that's Bastion, Super Meat Boy and Torchlight. There are more than 3 indie games I would've missed without a PS3. These are just the "indies" I own on the PS3:
